FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COFFEEN, IL — October 19, 2026 — On Sunday, October 18, 2026, at approximately 11:05 p.m., the Coffeen Fire Protection District was dispatched by Montgomery County 911 for a reported garage fire.

Engine 110 was the first arriving engine and found visible fire and smoke coming from the structure. Firefighters immediately initiated suppression efforts by deploying a 1¾-inch pre-connected handline to begin extinguishing the fire.

The Coffeen Fire Protection District responded with 11 personnel staffing four apparatus. Due to the nature of the incident, automatic mutual aid was requested from the following agencies:

* Fillmore Community Fire Protection District
* Taylor Springs Fire Department
* Witt Fire Department
* Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service

The Coffeen Fire Protection District would like to thank all mutual-aid agencies for their assistance and support during this incident. We also extend our appreciation to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Montgomery County 911 for their assistance and coordination.

Cooperation between local emergency service agencies is essential to providing effective emergency response and protecting our communities. We appreciate the dedication of all personnel who responded to this incident.

We have made some major improvements to our department, and we’re excited about where we’re headed! From new gear and nozzles to updated extrication equipment, EMS equipment, and improvements throughout our fleet, we’re continuing to invest in our members and our ability to serve our community.

No prior experience is required! We provide in-house training and offer opportunities to attend specialized classes and training to help you learn, grow, and become a valuable part of the team.

📍 Applicants must live within or near the Coffeen Fire Protection District.

👨‍🚒 Have a young person interested in the fire service? We also offer a Junior Firefighter Program for youth ages 14–17 who want to learn, train, and get involved!

Volunteering isn’t about having all the answers or knowing everything on day one. It’s about being willing to learn, working as a team, and being there for your community when you’re needed.

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE 🚧

Please be advised that Locust Street from Main Street to Cumberland Street will be closed today, October 3rd, from 8:00 AM until approximately noon.

The closure is necessary while the Fire Department conducts annual hose testing.

Please use an alternate route. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we complete this important fire equipment testing.

🚨 FREE SMOKE ALARMS AVAILABLE FOR COFFEEN FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT RESIDENTS! 🚨

The Coffeen Fire Protection District is offering free smoke alarms to residents within our fire protection district.

🏠 Important: Smoke alarms must be installed by Coffeen Fire Protection District personnel. We do not simply provide the alarms for residents to install themselves. Our personnel will work with you to determine proper placement and install the alarms in your home.
