Today celebrates the one year anniversary of Leaderboard to Leadership: How to Earn and Excel in Your First Sales Leadership Role.

As I look back on the past year, this book has had the impact I intended as I spent hours every week writing.

Sales leaders are using it to do the inner work and think strategically on what it means to lead. Sales organizations are having their leaders align as they read it together. It’s introduced us to executives who have read it and said, “We want to support our sales leaders in this way.”

Leveling up is hard. But it’s also fun.

Making money is a different skill set than keeping money or making it grow.

Goal setting is a different skill set than goal ex*****on.

Set SMART goals? Great! How are you going to execute?

In my world of sales leadership development, sales leaders and salespeople need to understand the difference and do both well.

That’s why I wrote my first book back in 2020 called Beyond the Board. It’s one thing to create a vision board or goals, and a complete other to create a plan that you can follow through on.

Why are the goals important?
Who are you going to be in the process?
How will you align your strengths?
How will you track behaviors and mindset?

Running goal setting AND ex*****on workshops are some of the most rewarding work I do. Teaching sales leaders to do this with their teams places an exponential factor in goal attainment.

Sales is all about energy. It’s about emotions, hope, and going all-in without burning out.

The best sales leaders understand energy management and use it to their team’s advantage.

They ignite performance using it. It’s transformational.

And yet most sales leaders aren’t taught about it, how to increase their own energetic capacity, or coach it to their teams.

Back in 2010 my sales director gave me the book The Power of Full Engagement. It was a life-changer. She was trying to coach my emotional energy as I was overcoming trauma from my past. It’s important that you have top-performing sales leaders in your development programs.

There are two views to sales leadership development:

1: This is a waste of time and we have to go through the motions. I’m here because something is wrong and I’m being fixed.

2: I can’t believe how lucky I am to be in this program with other successful sales leaders. All top leaders continue to sharpen their saw and my strengths and potential are being unleashed.

When you have top-performing sales leaders and senior leaders in your development programs they send the message that no one is above development. Great leaders WANT it.

It becomes to the place to be. Surrounded with others who are pushing the limits on their inner and outer games. Aligning with leaders who want to make a difference.

Great leaders combined with great development content builds ALL leaders.

The tide raises all boats.

And they are actually rowing in the same direction.

There is no proof that doing a job well means you can be a leader for that role.

Every new role deserves training for the new rules of engagement.

And no space is more guilty of this than the move from the sales to sales leadership.

Which blows my mind because great sales leaders WANT to be their best and have the tools to ignite performance in themselves and their teams.

The organizations and sales leaders we work with know training and development isn’t about fixing something wrong or mean they aren’t enough.

It means they and their organizations believe in their potential and the connect better sales leaders to better results.

It means they know sales isn’t the same as sales leadership.

It means they are ready to scale without breaking their people.

Your sales leaders are your competitive advantage. As a sales leader, YOU are a competitive advantage.

“Do you know what happened?”

We all have the capacity to be great coaches when we seek to understand before we are understood.

This weekend, we went out on a friend’s boat. The 11 year olds tried waterskiing. One of the girls is top-3 in the country so she was the “coach.”

When one girl fell, instead of saying, “you did this wrong and that’s why you fell,” the experienced skier asked a question first.

An 11-year old.

Sometimes sales leaders (or any leader for that matter) are in such a hurry and under so much pressure that they tell the other person what they did wrong.

Instead of asking first.

Turns out the other girl knew exactly why she fell, said so, hopped back up and held on with one hand. 🖐️

So this week’s lesson is brought to you from a child. Genuine curiosity and servant leadership creates the best learning experiences to those we lead and coach.
