A September 15 reminder for CPAs, advisors and plan sponsors:

Your tax filing may have been extended to October 15, but that doesn’t mean you have another month to make your plan contributions.

For calendar-year plans, Cash Balance, Defined Benefit and Profit Sharing contributions must be made by September 15th to be deductible for the 2025 plan year.

And for Cash Balance and Defined Benefit Plans, there’s another reason this date matters:

Minimum required contributions are also due by September 15. Missing that deadline can mean IRS excise taxes and notices.

So, if those 2025 contributions haven’t been finalized yet, now is the time to check in with your actuary and investment team to make sure everything is funded on time.

October 15 may be your tax filing deadline.
September 15 is the date your retirement plan team should have circled.
