FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Car vs. Pedestrian - College Parkway

At approximately 11:11 p.m. on June 16, 2026, the Colchester Fire Department, along with Saint Michael's College Fire and Rescue, was dispatched to the area of 172 College Parkway for a reported motor vehicle versus pedestrian incident with CPR in progress.

Emergency crews arrived on scene to find bystanders already providing lifesaving resuscitation efforts. Fire and EMS personnel took over patient care and continued resuscitative efforts before transporting the patient to the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Despite the efforts of bystanders and emergency responders, the patient was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

No further information will be released by the Colchester Fire Department at this time.

Training Highlight – Wildland/Brush Fire Operations

This past Monday, members conducted wildland and brush fire training focused on water supply challenges and fire containment strategies.

Crews responded to a simulated brush fire in a wooded area where a key challenge was incorporated into the scenario, there was no direct access for a fire engine to deliver water to the fire scene. To overcome this obstacle, a portable pond was established to simulate a nearby static water source. Firefighters then utilized the department’s UTV to draft water from the portable pond and supply forestry handlines, demonstrating an effective method of delivering water in remote areas.

In addition to water supply operations, crews practiced constructing fire lines, a critical wildland firefighting technique used to remove vegetation and other fuels, creating a barrier to help slow or stop the spread of fire.

Training scenarios like these help prepare our members for the unique challenges associated with wildland and brush fires, ensuring they are ready to protect our community when these incidents occur.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Vehicle Accident - Mountain View Drive

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on June 8, 2026, the Colchester Fire Department, Colchester Rescue Squad, and Colchester Police Department were dispatched to the area of 463 Mountain View Drive for a report of a single vehicle accident. Initial reports indicated the vehicle had gone over the edge of an upper parking lot and was resting in a near vertical position with the operator still inside.

Upon arrival, emergency crews found a single vehicle positioned nose-down with the rear of the vehicle elevated vertical in the air. The operator remained inside the vehicle but was conscious and able to communicate with responders, initially reporting no injuries.

Due to the precarious position of the vehicle, crews first focused on stabilizing it to ensure the safety of both the occupant and emergency personnel. Once stabilization was completed, firefighters safely extricated the operator from the vehicle. The individual was evaluated by EMS personnel at the scene.

Following the rescue operation, a towing company removed the vehicle from its position.

The Colchester Fire Department would like to thank the Essex Fire Department for providing station coverage during the incident, ensuring continued emergency response capability throughout the Town of Colchester while crews operated at the scene.

Public Event & Training - Colchester, VT & Burlington, VT

The Colchester Fire Department Marine Division had an active and rewarding week participating in a couple community events.

Our members attended the Season Opener Boating Event in the City of Burlington, where numerous public safety agencies and civilian boating organizations came together to showcase their vessels and equipment. The event provided a great opportunity to engage with community members, promote boating safety, and highlight the capabilities of marine emergency response resources throughout the area.

The Marine Division also participated in the annual Torch Run organized by law enforcement agencies in support of the Special Olympics Vermont. We are honored to support such a meaningful cause and stand alongside our public safety partners in raising awareness and support for Vermont’s Special Olympics athletes.

To round out the week, our crews spent time conducting nighttime marine training to maintain proficiency and readiness for emergency responses on Lake Champlain. We are proud of the dedication our members continue to demonstrate both in serving the community and training to provide the highest level of service.

Last week was National Police Week, and although we missed the opportunity to recognize it at the time, we want to take a moment to thank the dedicated members of the Colchester Police Department and all law enforcement officers for their service, professionalism, and commitment to protecting our community each day.

Mutual Aid Response - Milton, VT

At approximately 4:00 AM this morning, May 18, 2026, the Colchester Fire Department was requested to provide mutual aid assistance to the Town of Milton for a reported structure fire.

Colchester responded with an engine company, and crews assisted Milton firefighters on scene with overhaul operations following the main fire knockdown.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Vehicle into Building - South Park Drive

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on May 17, 2026, the Colchester Fire Department, Colchester Rescue Squad, and Colchester Police Department were dispatched to 33 South Park Drive for a reported motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle into a building, injuries and hazards unknown.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a pickup truck had traveled completely into the structure, causing moderate structural damage to the building. The operator of the vehicle was able to self-extricate prior to emergency personnel arrival, and all occupants of the building safely evacuated without injury.

Due to the extent of the structural damage, representatives from the Vermont Division of Fire Safety and the VT USAR TF1 team were requested to respond and assist with the incident. Emergency crews secured utilities to the building to ensure scene safety while the vehicle was removed from the structure.

Following evaluation and coordination with the Division of Fire Safety, the building was turned back over to the property representative.

Motor Vehicle Accident - Colchester Point Road

At approximately 9:44 a.m. this morning, the Colchester Fire Department, Colchester Rescue Squad, and Colchester Police Department were dispatched to Colchester Point Road for the report of a single-vehicle motor vehicle crash involving a utility pole, with initial reports indicating the vehicle was on fire. While units were responding, dispatch advised that the operator was still inside the vehicle. A subsequent update confirmed the occupant had been able to self-extricate prior to emergency personnel arriving on scene.

Crews arrived to find a single vehicle resting on its side with one occupant outside of the vehicle. It was determined the vehicle was not on fire. Responders also found a utility pole completely severed at the base as a result of the collision. Due to the extent of the damage, multiple nearby residences sustained utility-related damage from wires being pulled from the homes.

The Fire Department remained on scene until Green Mountain Power was able to isolate power to the affected area and secure the scene. Once utilities were secured, crews mitigated remaining hazards associated with the vehicle and the scene was turned over to Green Mountain Power personnel.

Colchester Point Road remained closed for an extended period of time while utility crews worked to restore power and repair infrastructure.
