In this week's episode of PWNED, Justin and Jack discuss how organizations approach the left and right of "boom" – the moment when a security breach occurs.

The apprehension that comes with waiting for the inevitable boom is a familiar source of anxiety for all security professionals. While MDR planning can provide peace of mind when cleaning up post-breach, it comes with a hefty price tag. Unfortunately, many companies focus too much on MDR preparation instead of investing in stronger preventative measures, leaving their security to chance.

To develop effective cybersecurity strategies that safeguard your organization from future attacks, it's crucial to understand your business's goals. Investing the right amount of money upfront to create a secure environment is key, rather than scrambling to recover once the damage is done.

Recent reports tell us that stress (60%) and burnout (53%) are the biggest personal risks CISOs face today, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Rethinking your organization's cybersecurity structure and the role of a modern CISO is paramount to today's security success. You can begin with three simple steps.

1. Set Expectations: Successful CISOs are specific and transparent about what they will do in their role. They reinforce the reality that security is a team sport.

2. Be a Business Executive First, Cyber Expert Second: The ability to solve business problems using security is what turns a security practitioner into a CISO.

3. Align on a Strategy: Without a strategy, you're purely reactive, and you find yourself reacting to fires all day, every day.

Read more in today's Dark Reading article, written by our CEO, Justin:

A CISO with a focused role will be better prepared to thrive in an organization and accelerate adoption and understanding of cybersecurity.
