🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲 HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! 🇺🇸 🇺🇲 🇺🇸

We hope you're able to spend the day with those who are important to you and take a moment to reflect on the 250th anniversary of our country's independence, as well as the sacrifices made by so many along the way.

After you drink a lot of water (technical amounts can be found in our last post), we encourage you to enjoy this weekend safely and have a few tips to keep in mind. We've attached a word of the day, and it's definition, to this post. Conveniently, these are what we're asking you to keep attached to your body, along with the associated limbs, by leaving the pyrotechnics to the professionals. Seriously, nobody shoots their eye out or erases a few fingers on purpose. Just because it's an accident doesn't mean it won't cause serious, irreversible damage to you or someone else. On that note, the fire danger is also HIGH today, and fireworks can easily create an issue that would require our intervention. Same goes for outside fires. Please consider this before burning as a grass or brush fire will spread rapidly today.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T HEARD...

It's warm outside. In fact, we're in the middle of a heat wave that's sticking around into this weekend. For those who like snow, you'll have to go to Montana. For those that stick it out here, if you haven't been drinking water, and extra water, and maybe a little more after that, you should be. Be sure to include electrolytes too. Before you ask: milkshakes, adult beverages, and that double mocha cold foam latte thing with the blended ice cubes in it - they all don't count. Don't forget about your pet friends too. Keep them hydrated, cool, off hot pavement, and especially out of hot cars.

With that said, for the humans in your life, Lemonade is a great option. Our duty crew stopped by and grabbed some from a few friendly faces on Old Hebron Road yesterday (10/10, would recommend). We heard they're off today (early holiday break or we drank them out of stock, can't be sure), but if you see them, or any of their competition out there this summer, be sure to grab a glass and show your support.

Reminder of the budget vote today (May 20th) until 8pm at Town Hall. Included in the Town budget is one Firefighter/EMT position, which is the last position needed to meet the staffing level determined necessary three years ago.

In 2023, the department and town identified the need for additional firefighter/EMT staffing. Today, three of our four shifts are staffed with three personnel, while one shift is still staffed with two. The proposed budget includes funding for the last position needed to complete this staffing initiative.

We encourage all eligible residents to stay informed and participate in today’s budget vote.

On 5/14/26 Colchester Fire & Emergency Medical Services responded to Middletown Road (Route 16) in the area of Skinner Road for a motor vehicle accident. Engine 128 extricated one patient who was transported with non-life threatening injuries by A628 and Middlesex paramedics. A-Shift was on duty.

On 5/9/26 crews from Colchester Fire & Emergency Medical Services and Bozrah Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. assisted Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department Inc. with a vehicle accident on Route 2 Eastbound near to Exit 30. Rescue 128 completed stabilization and extricated one occupant. Ambulance 628 and Middlesex Health paramedics transported the party with non-life threatening injuries. D-Shift was on duty.

At 10:48pm last evening, Colchester Fire & Emergency Medical Services was requested to assist Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department Inc. with a water rescue. The initial report was one person missing in the water which was confirmed by first arriving Lebanon personnel. Colchester units arrived shortly after and deployed our boat, quickly locating the victim and removing them from the water to Lebanon EMS units waiting on shore. Excellent job by B-Shift members and all responding personnel who contributed to a positive outcome for this person.

The success of this rescue was no coincidence. Aside from years of coordination and establishing relationships between mutual aid partners, what played a critical role in the outcome of this incident was staffing in the firehouse. With 3 personnel assigned to the shift (Shift Commander and 2 Firefighter/EMTs), Colchester was able to immediately provide personnel and a full compliment of rescue equipment to this emergency moments after dispatch. Volunteer personnel responded from their homes directly to the scene, eliminating what would be a substantial delay in resource response. At a time when seconds mattered, the minutes saved meant necessary resources arrived quicker, equipment was deployed earlier, and the victim was rescued sooner.

Preparedness is not a convenience, and staffing the station with qualified personnel ensures a prompt, qualified, prepared response. Emergencies happen at all hours and don't take off days, nights, weekends, or holidays. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our personnel are on duty to serve you promptly and professionally.
