NOEC is asking members to conserve energy on Thursday and Friday from 2-8 pm.
Due to unplanned generation outages affecting the Midwest, members are being asked to consider conservation efforts in order to protect grid stability.
NOEC General Manager Daniel Webster said it may not take long for the regional power grid to reach a point of vulnerability during what is expected to be an unseasonably warm stretch of daytime high temps.
“We want to do our part as a cooperative to limit unnecessary power usage at all times but especially when higher energy demand is predicted,” Webster explained. “It’s amazing the difference even the smallest measures can make when done collectively.”
With the forecast calling for high temps each day in the 90s, air conditioners across the Midwest will be running wide open. Here are some ideas to help conserve energy:
•Turn off lights as soon as you leave a room.
•Use natural light from the “cool” side of the home to light rooms. Draw blinds/curtains on the “warm” side of the home to help block heat.
•Limit use of the oven or stove opting instead for smaller cooking appliances like microwaves, pressure cookers, slow cookers, and toaster ovens. Better yet, fire up the grill more often and cook outside.
•Set thermostat to 76 degrees F when the home is occupied and 80 degrees F when unoccupied.
•Change your HVAC filter at least monthly during periods of higher usage.
•Take measures to correct any air infiltration issues by sealing gaps with caulking and weatherstrip.
•Replace incandescent and CFL light bulbs with more energy efficient LED bulbs
