This topic is very personal for me.
I had learning challenges after my head injury at age 5.
At age 9, a teacher called me ‘the boy with the broken brain.’
Adults have to be very mindful of their external words, because they become a child’s internal words.
For example, I remember every time I failed an exam or wasn’t picked in sports, I would say to myself ‘it’s cause I have a broken brain.’
Your brain is like a supercomputer and your self-talk is the program it will run.
So if you tell yourself ‘I am not good at remembering names’, you will not remember the name of the next person you meet because you programmed your computer not to.
Your mind is always eavesdropping on your self-talk. ✨
And If you fight for your limitations you get to keep them.
Audit your inner voice and stand guard to the doors of your mind especially to the low opinions of others.
Remember that every single thought rewires your brain at a neurological level.
If you knew how powerful your mind is, you wouldn’t think or say anything you don’t want to be true.
And when we do think something negative, it’s not the end of the world any more than eating one donut is.
Just don’t beat yourself up, correct it with something simple like the word ‘yet’. “I’m not great at this...yet.”
Bottom line: What you say, think and hear matters, especially to your gray matter. 🧠
Side note on inner talk: When I teach speed reading, a bad habit we overcome is that inner voice. Meaning the reason most people don’t read faster is because of that inner voice you hear while reading (called ‘subvocalization’) slows you down substantially. If you have to say all the words inside your mind to comprehend them, your reading speed is limited to your talking speed, not your thinking speed. Taking time saying words that you’ve seen countless times like the word ‘computer’ is not necessary for comprehension, any more than saying ‘stop’ to yourself when you see a stop sign. And we can think far faster than we can speak.
That’s why you can listen to podcasts and audiobooks at 2x or 3x and still understand it, you just can’t talk that fast. 💡
Be limitless! 🔥
