You may see it clinging to a tree trunk, fence post, or stone wall—the Texas spiny lizard.

Its rough, textured scales and mottled coloring provide excellent camouflage. These quick-moving lizards feed on insects and can be helpful visitors around homes, gardens, and natural areas.

When threatened, they often race up the nearest tree and move to the opposite side of the trunk to stay hidden.

Crape myrtles are NOT native.
They’re not “basically native.”
They’re not “practically Texan.”

They are Asian ornamentals with such a chokehold on American Southern landscaping culture that entire neighborhoods look like a monoculture nursery display — while our native pollinators starve in the shade of every single one.

The only thing they reliably attract?
Honey bees — another non-native species.

Beyond that, zero ecological value.
No host plant relationships.
No support for native bees, moths, or birds.
They exist for one thing: human ego.

And as someone who knows all this, driving past row after row of purposely planted crape myrtles isn’t just disappointing — it’s infuriating.

I will never let this go😒😒
