π Filing an Insurance Claim for Water, Fire, or Smoke Damage? Here's What Helps Most
When disaster hits your home, the restoration work matters β but so does how the claim gets documented. After years of working alongside insurance adjusters across Southern Colorado, here's what actually speeds up a claim and gets it paid right:
β
Call your insurance company first, before you start any cleanup β most policies require prompt notice
β
Take photos and video of the damage before anything is moved, removed, or repaired
β
Keep receipts for any temporary repairs or emergency expenses (a tarp, a hotel stay, etc.)
β
Don't throw away damaged items until your adjuster says it's OK β they may need to see them
β
Ask your restoration company for daily moisture logs and drying documentation, not just a final invoice
β
Get everything in writing β verbal promises from an adjuster are easy to forget on both sides
The biggest mistake we see homeowners make is starting cleanup on their own before anyone documents the loss. Once the damage is gone, so is a big piece of your claim.
