📊 THE AUGUST 2026 DROWNING REPORT IS NOW AVAILABLE

There is encouraging news in this month’s data, but the numbers also tell us where drowning-prevention efforts still need to focus.

The August 2026 Drowning Report recorded 209 fatal drowning incidents in the United States, making it the lowest August in the six-year record and 19.9% below the five-year August average.

One finding stands out:

🌊 Lakes accounted for 74% of the overall decline. Lake drowning deaths fell to 70, compared with a five-year August average of 108.6.

But the report also reminds us not to stop at the headline.

🏊 Natural open water still accounted for nearly 80% of August drowning deaths.
🦺 Watercraft and lack of life-jacket use continue to appear in reported circumstances.
👥 Teenagers represented a larger share of August deaths, but the data shows this was a composition effect, not a surge in teen drownings.

One good month is encouraging. It is not permission to ease up.

The purpose of The Drowning Report is not simply to count lives lost. It is to understand where, how, and why drownings are occurring so we can turn data into prevention.
