In 2014 and 2015, the nation’s leading brokers, many of whom are current members of the Broker Resource Network (BRN), faced a pivotal moment. Consumer real estate search was being dominated by advertising-driven national portals whose business model was to monetize broker listing data, sell leads back to the very firms that created the listings, and place competing agents in front of their own clients.

That same year, a major shift occurred: Zillow overtook the industry’s own portal, Realtor.com, in consumer traffic. For many brokers, this was a wake-up call. Control over listing content, brand visibility, and the direct consumer relationship was slipping away from the people who actually sell homes. The industry needed an alternative: a consumer-facing search experience that was owned and governed by brokers and MLSs… not Wall Street or ad-tech companies.

Most of The Realty Alliance firms in the BRN contributed $5,000 to fund this initiative, alongside approximately 50 MLS partners. Together, 50 contributing brokers and 50 contributing MLSs explored three possible paths: build, buy, or partner. The decision was made to partner, leading to the birth of the Broker Public Portal (BPP) through a relationship with Homesnap.

For years, this partnership grew the BPP’s reach and influence. But when Homesnap was folded into CoStar/Homes.com, the BPP gained a financial windfall from the transaction, yet lost its operational partner.

The BPP board once again revisited the buy-build-partner decision, evaluating dozens of proposals from potential partners. None met the requirements. None included the AI-driven future we knew was essential. So, the board took decisive action: hire a CEO and build the new portal ourselves.

The search led to Dan Troup, who had previously led the creation of remax.com. In his first six months, Dan worked with the board to develop a comprehensive plan and assemble a top-tier team. One year later, that team produced what you can see today at brokerdata.com. This is not the final consumer domain, but a functioning platform used to onboard the first customers and demonstrate the site to prospective MLS partners.

This week, Chicago based MRED, one of the largest MLSs in the nation, announced their support for the Broker Public Portal and signed their agreement. We need the other 500+ MLSs to do the same with your help.

The Broker Value Proposition
Positioning Statement

For brokers, the Broker Public Portal is the only national home search platform that connects consumers directly to the listing brokerage—without selling leads, running ads, or competing with your brand—while driving SEO, brand visibility, and consumer trust back to your firm.

Reasons to Believe

Direct Leads, No Middleman – Consumer inquiries go directly to the listing broker, not to a third-party lead buyer or competing agent, preserving your client relationships and referral opportunities.
MLS-Powered Accuracy – The platform is powered by MLS data, ensuring unmatched accuracy, completeness, and timeliness. Consumers trust what they see, and brokers retain control over listing content.
Complete Property Search – All properties in America are searchable, not just active listings—creating a property-centric experience that attracts broader consumer interest and improves long-term SEO performance.
Brand Amplification – Every listing links back to the listing brokerage website, improving your site’s domain authority and increasing organic traffic to your own digital assets.
Full-Firm Visibility – Your brand, offices, agents, and teams are promoted, offering full-firm visibility and helping consumers find the people behind the listings—without paying for upgraded profiles or advertising tiers.
Integrated Services – Brokerages can integrate ancillary services like mortgage, title, insurance, or home warranty offerings directly into the consumer experience on their listings.
No Broker Cost – The platform is free to brokers, provided as a benefit through your MLS subscription—no upsells, no bait-and-switch.
Industry Governance – It’s governed by brokers and MLSs, not Wall Street or ad-tech companies. Your firm has a voice in how the platform evolves, unlike national portals.
Earlier Consumer Engagement – It enhances listing performance across the ecosystem, since consumers using BPP often arrive earlier in their home search journey, increasing quality of inquiries.
Cooperative Power – It’s a cooperative strategy to reclaim visibility and value, building national reach by combining the power of local MLSs and brokerages without giving up control of your data or customer relationships.
A Rallying Call to Brokers
In 2014, we came together to answer the call when Zillow surpassed Realtor.com in consumer traffic. We saw the writing on the wall and acted decisively to protect broker control over listings, brand, and the consumer relationship. That decision gave birth to the Broker Public Portal.

Now, the moment has come again. The technology is built. The leadership is in place. The only thing standing between this vision and nationwide impact is MLS participation.

This is where you come in. We need every BRN broker to help secure meetings with your MLS leadership. Share the story. Show them the platform. Explain that it costs just 50 cents per agent per month; the more MLSs that join, the lower the price for everyone.

This is a project brokers started, funded, and guided from day one. It was built to serve our listings, our brands, and our clients. Not to line the pockets of advertising portals.

Let’s finish what we started.

Let’s reclaim the search experience for the people who actually sell homes.
