Melvin the Octopus

Melvin the Octopus is complete!
This 100+ hour project had been delayed through many life circumstances but I’m happy to finish it in time to double as a wedding gift for my fantastic friend/customer Justin. I would say about 75% was done with hand tools and the first quarter involved a chainsaw on the back porch of my old apartment complex. This has been my favorite project I’ve made and I learned some valuable lessons (unfortunately after) about better sanding/staining techniques.
I put together a video with some time lapse clips that create an interesting visual of the project as a whole. Unfortunately I lost a lot of clips from the first half of the carving but it came together nicely, nonetheless. Special thanks to composer/musician Cyrus Reynolds for letting me use his inspirational song “End of Days” for my video. God bless you all!

Dad had cut down a few trees this year in his backyard that had been killed off by the pine beetles. After grabbing some of the firewood that came from those trees I was able to carve a quick piece and found the inspiration from the song Tapestry by Hillsong United. I figured it was a fit gift for my parents this Christmas.
I am always moved by the song but more so the metaphor along with it. Each of our lives in Christ is a unique pattern to God’s unfolding drama, to His tapestry. Every passion we have, every fallback we have, every choice we make, is woven together to make something we cannot comprehend until we reach heaven. Praise God for giving us salvation by coming to this earth and praise God for giving each of us a life to live to the fullest for Him. Merry Christmas
