I’m a lifelong learner.
I love to learn and am a sponge for information, ideas and fun facts.
One of my interests is Bonsai.
Bonsai is a Japanese expression (Bon – shallow tray, sai – plant) for the Chinese study of trees growing in the wild.
It has become an art form for small and large format plants grown both indoors and outdoors and in natural settings.
I wanted a small indoor juniper bonsai tree.
I found a local bonsai expert who’s been doing this for over 30 years.
After talking with him I decided that an indoor bonsai was not what I wanted because of the constant care required to maintain a healthy tree.
We travel frequently and the care and thriving are the main issues.
And I’m all about thriving.
You may be wondering what bonsai is doing in this piece seemingly about business success.
What I’m about is having the life you really want.
The funny thing is as I study bonsai, I learn more about what not to do than what to do.
And learning what not to do may be more important than knowing what to do.
The reason is that knowing what not to do saves you a massive amount of time – time you could be spending on doing the right things to have what you really want.
I’ve come to the conclusion learning and adjusting quickly from your mistakes may be the most critical and sustainable competitive edge you can have in your mental tool kit to thrive now and into the future.
Action Step:
Notice how you react when you have made a mistake, or something has unintended consequences.
Notice if you are you quick to own up to it.
Do you quickly look for and implement solutions?
Do you blame others?
Do you hang on it or let it go?
Ask yourself, "What did I learn from this?" the answer may surprise you.
