šŸ‘‹šŸ’œ The latest link, ADHD and dementia. We know ADHD is hereditary, but we also know of the links between ADHD and substance abuse. It's important to also think about the work and lifestyle that would be "typical" for an adult with ADHD. Many of our soldiers, firefighters, police officers, teachers, paramedics and other intense positions that allow for more "doing" are the careers ADHDers find themselves excelling in. We are thrill seekers, travelers and multi-taskers and all of this can create a life of fun but also a life that sees and feels a lot of difficult things.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy reading about this stuff and seeing how it fits in with my own family (and it does), but I often find the strengths of this population are ignored or misunderstood and all we're left with are the negatives. šŸ§ šŸ’œ

A large study has found a link between ADHD and dementia across generations. The study shows that parents and grandparents of individuals with ADHD were at higher risk of dementia than those with children and grandchildren without ADHD.

šŸ‘‹šŸ’œ This is exactly how we should view each other. None of us are broken. As parents of ND kids (and most of us ND ourselves), we can feel different, misunderstood, judged, but NEVER broken. We're all a little "bent", but this is what makes us see the world from a different perspective.

I don't see situations, learning, problem-solving, or parenting as many of my friends do. My kids will never learn, socialize or behave in the same way as most of their friends. But we love our view of this awesome world and the more bends, the more perspectives we can see.

To all the misshapen, bend-embracing, perception-shifting people, I see you and you are SO beautiful. šŸ’œšŸ§

Just in case you come to my house and you’re unsure of what you’re walking into. My children will always know that love is love and so will all of their friends. ā™„ļø

Most days definitely do not start out like this BUT there isn’t a day that I’m not reminded of how lucky I am to have these little people call me ā€œmomā€. It’s not about gender, finances or whatever you think is ā€œperfectā€. I don’t care if it’s a bio child, adopted, your niece, nephew or the neighbor kid down the street. EVERY single child wants and deserves love. Happy Mother’s Day to all the women who continue to choose love, regardless of how they were mothered. ā¤ļø

Imagine more research into sensory processing differences or funding used to make classrooms and workplaces more universally designed. Imagine neurodiversity training for all schools and companies or more SLP and OT services being funded, regardless of health insurance. Imagine learning as a child that billions have been spent trying to ā€œcureā€ and eradicate the very behaviors and manner of cognition that makes you who you are.

Your definition of ā€œsocializingā€ does not need to look like anything that makes you uncomfortable. Don’t like small talk? Me too! Don’t like drama? Me either! Sometimes I just like being around people but not taking to anyone and that doesn’t mean I’m anti-social. It means I know who I am, I know the types of conversations I enjoy and I choose to save my energy for those situations. šŸ’œšŸ§

ā€œNON-VERBALā€ does not mean non-communicative! It also doesn’t mean the person doesn’t understand every word you’re saying around them, for them or about them. Do not assume that everyone must communicate the way that makes you comfortable. Do not assume that lack of words means lack of intellect. Do not ā€œspeak for someoneā€ if you haven’t listened to how they communicate, how they want something done or have provided them an augmentative communication device (AAC). They can speak for themselves.
