In case you didn't know - if you don't normally have to file a tax return but are otherwise eligible for the Child Tax Credit, you can go here https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/child-tax-credit-non-filer-sign-up-tool to sign up.

If you don't file a tax return, you can still get advance payments of the 2021 Child Tax Credit. To sign up, enter basic information with this tool.

If the IRS sent you money this year for stimulus or child tax credit, they will send you a letter. Please keep the letter and bring it to me at tax time.

If you are not receiving the child tax credit because you are not required to file a return, go to IRS.gov. Or let me know. You are probably eligible, just need to file the paperwork!

And, for those already receiving it, if your income changes, report it. Child Tax Credit Update Portal (CTC UP on IRS.gov).

If you are wondering if you have had enough withheld this year, go to www.irs.gov/individuals/tax-withholding-estimator. It'll take a minute to do it, but it's good to know before you come see me!

Check your tax withholding with the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator, a tool that helps ensure you have the right amount of tax withheld from your paycheck.

2021 tax year. The charitable cash contribution deduction for non-itemizers has been extended to 2021. And, to make it better, marrieds get $600, singles still get $300.

So, if you were thinking this would be a great year to contribute to your favorite charity - do it!

Remember, it does not apply to donated items - only money!

55 days. That's how long you have to get your 2016 taxes done if you are on extension.

Let's do this! It's time to do taxes!

12/11/2016

Tax time is just around the corner. Are you ready?

Big warning out there to anyone getting a refund that includes Additional Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC). In hopes to reduce the number of illegal refunds, the IRS will not start issuing refunds (for returns with either of those credits) until February 15.

But you want to get your taxes done before that time. This is how it works. If someone uses your social security number to file a tax return, they get the refund. Unless you have your tax return in there too - then they will have to look at them. You get the refund, not the bad guy!

So - file early. It's always the best bet.

Just read that there is a 400% surge in IRS email Phishin schemes already this tax season. The IRS will NOT SEND YOU AN EMAIL. So if you get one, do not respond. Wait for the letter in the mail.

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2016!

A couple of things I just read:

- The IRS will begin accepting individual electronic returns on Tuesday, January 19. But if you are ready to get your taxes done earlier I will be ready. I can do the returns and have them waiting on the IRS's "front door" when they are ready.

- 2016 mileage rates have decreased - a lot! Standard went down 3.5¢ to 54¢. Medical care and moving went down 4¢ to 19¢

12/20/2015

It's almost here! Tax Season! Couple of things / reminders.

1. File as early as you can. Especially if you have used TurboTax or other on-line software. Simply put, if you file first, the scammers can't use your SSN.
2. The IRS DOES NOT CALL YOU. They send letters (and usually they aren't nice ones!)

Merry Christmas! Hope to see you soon.

QuickBooks Users take note:

QuickBooks 2014 and earlier are NOT compatible with Windows 10.

QuickBooks 2015 will work but make sure .NET 3.5 is enabled.
1. Open the Start menu and type Turn Windows features On or Off.
2. Click on Turn Windows features On or Off.
3. At the top, you will see an option for .NET Framework 3.5, ensure it is enabled. (if you have to enable it - reboot once you've done it.)
