Most organizations have plenty of paperwork.

Policies.
Forms.
Background checks.
Compliance records.

But paperwork has never stopped an insider threat.

People do.

Strong Personnel Security programs are built on trust, awareness, communication, and a culture where people feel comfortable asking for help before problems become security incidents.

The organizations that excel in today's threat environment understand that security is more than a compliance requirement. It's an ongoing investment in people.

What FSOs Can Learn From the 76ers’ Championship Win

The 76ers didn’t just beat the Spurs.
They reminded us what it looks like when a group of people decides to show up with intention.

Every possession mattered.
Every handoff was deliberate.
Every moment felt like someone saying, “I’ve got this—because the team is counting on me.”

That’s the part that sticks with me.

And their defense?
A living, breathing program—not rigid, not mechanical, but aware.
They noticed patterns.
They shut down risks.
They acted before the danger ever had a chance to grow.

Great FSOs do the same thing.
Not by barking rules, but by building trust.
Not by policing, but by teaching.
Not by fear, but by clarity.

The trophy wasn’t the real win.
The real win was the system—the culture—that made the trophy possible.

Championship teams and compliant security programs share the same secret:
disciplined people doing disciplined things, consistently.

That’s the work.
That’s the craft.
That’s the part no one sees but everyone feels.

What’s your takeaway from the game—and how does it shape the way you lead, protect, and support your team?

Does your RMF package feel more like a maze than a framework?

You’re not alone.

Many organizations pursuing an ATO find themselves buried in SSP updates, control baselines, artifacts, and eMASS requirements before realizing they need experienced support.

At Security First & Associates, we help contractors simplify the RMF process and build authorization packages that are organized, compliant, and ready for review.

The NBA playoffs are about more than basketball.

They reveal preparation, discipline, teamwork, and leadership under pressure.

That same principle applies to industrial security and NISPOM compliance under 32 CFR Part 117.

Strong security programs are not built overnight. They are developed through consistent processes, training, accountability, and a culture that protects sensitive information every day.

In our newest article, Security First & Associates explores what organizations can learn from the NBA playoffs about compliance readiness and security culture.

Aaron Judge struck out four times on Opening Day.

Most people focused on the strikeouts.
But that is not the real story.

He asked for help to see what he could not.

Security programs are no different.

Even strong teams develop blind spots.
Even experienced professionals miss patterns.
Even compliant programs drift over time.

The real risk is not the mistake.
It is not recognizing it.

Security is not just compliance.
It is awareness, culture, and the willingness to take a closer look.

If it has been a while since your program has had an outside perspective, it may be time.

St. Patrick’s Day brings celebrations, traditions, and gatherings with friends. It also brings a predictable increase in DUI incidents each year.

For most people, a DUI is a legal issue.
For cleared professionals, it may also become a reportable incident under NISPOM, which can impact security clearances and organizational risk.

In the national security community, decisions made outside the workplace can still affect mission readiness and trust.

Celebration isn’t the problem.
Impaired judgment is.

If you plan to celebrate this month:

• Plan your ride home ahead of time
• Look out for your friends and teammates
• Make choices that protect both your safety and your clearance

A moment of awareness can prevent a long-term consequence.

Security doesn’t end when eligibility is granted.

That moment isn’t a finish line. It’s the beginning of an ongoing climb.

I shared a new blog post using a mountain-climbing metaphor to explain why preparation, layered protection, adaptability, and strong teams matter just as much as tools and frameworks. Reaching the summit is important, but staying secure over time depends on what happens after deployment.

FSOs and AFSOs carry a critical responsibility, and leadership support makes a real difference. Training, communication, and the right systems help organizations stay resilient as conditions change.

What part of the security journey feels steepest right now? Culture, compliance, or keeping pace with evolving threats?
