Instructional leadership happens in the small, everyday actions, not just during teacher evaluations.

Practical ways principals can lead instruction daily:

• Visit classrooms for 5–10 minutes every day
• Leave one quick positive note or piece of feedback for teachers
• Ask teachers, “What support do you need from me?”
• Protect planning periods from unnecessary interruptions
• Use staff meetings for learning, not just announcements
• Celebrate effective teaching publicly and often
• Review student work regularly, not just test scores
• Be visible during transitions, lunch, and dismissal to strengthen school culture
• Follow through consistently on expectations and support
• Model lifelong learning by growing alongside your staff

The Tip‼️

Here are five highly impactful moves principals should make to set teachers and students up for success in the 2026–27 school year:

1. Lock in a Clear Instructional Focus (and stick to it)
Choose 1–2 priority areas (e.g., literacy across content areas, math problem-solving, or student engagement) and align everything (PD, walkthroughs, coaching) to those priorities.

2. Strengthen Tier 1 Instruction before adding interventions
Before layering on more programs, ensure core instruction is solid in every classroom. This includes:

* Standards-aligned lessons
* Checks for understanding
* Consistent use of high-impact strategies

If Tier 1 improves, you reduce the number of students needing Tier 2 and 3 support.

3. Build a simple, consistent data cycle
Teachers don’t need more data, they need better systems for using it. Implement a schoolwide cycle:

* Assess → Analyze → Plan → Reteach
Keep it simple and repeatable weekly or biweekly so it becomes habit, not a burden.

4. Protect teacher capacity. This is non-negotiable! Burnout is still real. Audit what you can remove, not just add:

* Cut unnecessary meetings
* Streamline paperwork
* Provide planning time with purpose

5. Invest in targeted, job-embedded coaching…not just PD. One-off PD sessions don’t change practice. Ongoing coaching does.

* Model lessons
* Co-plan with teachers
* Provide real-time feedback

Focus especially on new teachers and those who are struggling.
