The Mighty ChariotWHEEL was fortunate to partner with Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina in leading the coordination of a Gullah Geechee corridor tour for the President's Fellows. What a monumental day...
The President's Fellows were taken down to Charleston, SC to learn about Gullah Geechee culture and people from enslavement until now. They were introduced to historical figures and contemporary individuals who have worked, and still work, to preserve a rich and versatile culture. At the same time, the Fellows learned about African diasporic history and culture and its connection to present-day Gullah Geechee people.
Our trip weaved together folklore, history, traditions, foodways, and culture created by Black Charlestonians. Ultimately, each Fellow was able to understand the indelible influence of a people who were forcibly enslaved yet made beauty out of their circumstances, while providing tangible value to Charleston.
Seeing the contributions of the Gullah Geechee people reflected in modern-day Charleston yet realizing the ways they are being threatened by gentrification, economic instability, and cultural displacement provided an illustration of philanthropy's role and responsibility in helping support cultural continuance and the sustainability of Black communities.
