Cash flow should not take a vacation just because you do.

A lot of business owners spend months working hard so they can finally enjoy a few days away.

Then they spend the entire trip checking bank balances, responding to problems, and wondering what they are coming back to.

The goal is not just to build a business that generates revenue.

The is to build a business that creates predictable cash flow, strong systems, and enough confidence to step away without everything depending on you.

If taking a week off would create stress instead of freedom, the issue is not the vacation.

The issue is what the business is telling you.

What would need to change in your company for you to truly disconnect and enjoy the view? 🌴💰

People, Processes and Profit makes a business valuable.

As a industry consultant, I see a lot of owners focused on growing revenue, buying equipment, and adding crews.

Those things matter, but they are not what make a business valuable.

What makes a business valuable is:

💰 The right people in the right seats.
💰 Processes that create consistency whether the owner is there or not.
💰 Profit that can be reinvested into growth, equipment, technology, and the future of the company.

When one of those pieces is missing, the business becomes dependent on the owner to hold everything together.

That creates stress, bottlenecks and limits growth.

The strongest landscape companies focus on all three:

✅ People who are accountable and developed
✅ Processes that create consistency
✅ Profit that fuels the business

The goal is not just to build a company that produces revenue.

The is to build a company that creates value.

If you stepped away from your business for 30 days, what would break first: your people, your processes, or your profit?

One thing we've learned over the years is that the best ideas rarely come from sitting behind a desk.

They come from getting in a room with other business owners, seeing how they think, learning what is working in their companies, and having conversations that challenge your own perspective.

That is why Sahra Linnemann and I will be in Chicago on June 15 and 16 for the LeanScaper People Intensive.

The focus of this event is something every landscape company is dealing with right now: attracting, developing, and retaining great people. The companies that figure out the people side of the business are the ones that create long term growth and sustainability.

If you are planning to attend, let us know. We always enjoy connecting with other landscape business owners, sharing ideas, and continuing to learn alongside some of the best operators in the industry.

Hope to see you in Chicago.

One of the biggest mistakes I see during the busy season is owners assuming that a full schedule automatically means the business is profitable.

It does not.

When crews are moving fast and work keeps piling up, it becomes very easy to lose visibility into what jobs are actually producing profit and which ones are quietly eating away at your margins.

That is why job costing matters so much during this time of year.

The companies that consistently improve profitability are not waiting until the end of the season to review performance. They are reviewing labor, production rates, and job performance while work is still happening so they can make adjustments before small issues turn into expensive ones.

In this article, I break down how landscape business owners can use job costing as a management tool during the busy season instead of treating it like a report they look at after the damage is already done.

If your company is busy right now, this is the time to pay attention to the numbers behind the work.

Memorial Day means different things to different people, but at its core, it is a day to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice created opportunities that many of us benefit from every day. The ability to build a business, provide for our families, and pursue the life we want is something worth appreciating.

As you spend time with family and friends today, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the day and honor those who never made it home.

I thank all the families who carry that sacrifice with them every day.

As we head into a three day weekend, here is a question worth thinking about...

Can your business survive three days without you?

Not three days with you checking emails.
Not three days answering crew questions from your truck.
Three days where the business operates without your constant involvement.

If the answer is no, then that is a sign there are systems, processes, and leadership opportunities that still need to be built.

The best landscape companies are not dependent on the owner remembering everything or solving every problem.

They create clear expectations, build accountability, and put systems in place that allow the business to keep moving forward.

A holiday weekend can be a great test.

If you stepped away today, what would you walk into on Tuesday morning?

Your answer will tell you a lot about the next thing you should work on.
