It’s Throwback Thursday, and we’re taking a look back at a project that brought new life to Pittsburgh’s industrial roots.
TechMill 41 stands along the Allegheny River in Lawrenceville, on a former brownfield site adjacent to the 40th Street Bridge. Allen + Shariff provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design services for the 73,500 sq ft office building, designed to attract major technology companies to the Pittsburgh region.
The project combined modern workplace needs with the character of the site’s industrial history. A robust electrical system provides flexibility for future tenants, while rooftop HVAC units, VAV systems, plumbing infrastructure, and fire protection support the building’s day-to-day operations.
The project also transformed an adjacent former machine shop into unique office and laboratory space, while Bay 41, the skeletal remains of a former crane bay, became an outdoor gathering space connecting the development to the surrounding community.
TechMill 41 earned a 2020 AIA Pittsburgh Architecture Award in the Large Category, recognizing the thoughtful transformation of this former industrial site into a dynamic workplace and community destination.
