Sometimes the most global challenges have very local starting points.
At the Nuffield Agri-Summit in Ireland last month, Phil Hogan, former EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, and Trade, shared this piece of advice for young people:
“Work hard for people in your local community first.”
It sounds simple, but it highlights an opportunity for students to help build the capacity of people and communities to feed themselves, beginning with the producer.
Food security begins with the producer. Producers need the knowledge, skills, and networks to operate efficiently, effectively, and collaboratively.
How will you use the skills and knowledge you’re developing in college to strengthen the people, businesses, and communities that food security ultimately depends on?
