On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a law designating that the U.S. flag would consist of 13 alternating stripes of red on white with 13 white stars on a blue field? And that two years earlier, in 1775, that same legislative body founded the US Army to fight for independence from Great Britain?

Happy 247th to our flag, may she continue to wave as a reminder of the service and sacrifice that makes our nation what it is.
