Employees may want stability and still question whether they have a future with their organization.
Recent healthcare workforce research highlights an important distinction: 65% of Gen Z healthcare workers surveyed said they would prefer to stay with one employer for at least five years. Yet only about one in four employees surveyed trusted their employer to invest in their professional development.
That raises a bigger question:
Can your employees see a future with you?
Career development isn’t simply about promotions. Growth can come through learning opportunities, meaningful feedback, mentorship, stretch assignments, career conversations, and leaders who help employees understand what’s possible.
And this isn’t only a retention issue.
Career development can also be a workplace well-being issue.
Feeling stagnant, overlooked, uncertain about the future, or unsupported in your growth can affect morale, motivation, engagement, and mental well-being.
Conversely, opportunities to learn, grow, contribute meaningfully, and envision a future can strengthen an employee’s sense of purpose, confidence, connection, and investment in their work.
So organizations should be asking:
Do employees understand how they can grow?
Do managers know how to support their development?
Are opportunities accessible across teams?
Do employees believe the organization is invested in their future?
Career development isn’t separate from employee well-being. It’s one of the organizational conditions that can shape it.
At Healing Without Limits, we help organizations understand how workplace conditions influence employee mental well-being, engagement, culture, retention, and organizational performance—and develop strategies that address those factors together.
Before asking why employees leave, consider asking:
Have we created an environment where they can envision staying, growing, and thriving?
