Is it just me or are holiday parties always scheduled during nap or bedtime?!?!

Don’t worry, here’s how you go to the party and adjust your child’s sleep.

1. Buffer days. You know it’s coming. So, plan on having low key days at home the day before and possible to optimize sleep.

2. Stretch or shrink wake time. If timing makes sense, have baby take a nap slightly early that day. It’s okay that it will be shorter...you can always add in another catnap or early bedtime. On the other end, stretch how long they are awake and plan for the car nap on the way home. Now you may need to just call it bedtime if this missed nap goes late enough into the day, or push bedtime back if it’s still too early but they get a late catnap.

3. Monitor sugar and stimulation. The longer your child is around the festive chaos without a nap, the more manic behavior and big feelings show up. If you have a younger one, consider being the one that holds them when they’ve hit their limit instead of other people at the party. And back off that sugar before it’s time to go...you won’t want a sugar high if you are banking on them to sleep in the car.

Happy holidays!

Traveling is a tricky endeavor when you’re trying to keep baby on a sleep schedule. There’s always something exciting going on, friends and relatives who are anxious to see the baby, and they have no idea how hard you’ve worked to get your little one sleeping through the night.

-Changes in the routine are the quickest way to end up with an overtired baby, and overtiredness will almost undoubtedly see a reemergence of those bad sleep habits you’ve all worked so hard to prevent.

-In the event you have to share a room with your little one, try to create some kind of partition in the room so that baby can’t see you from their crib. Hang a blanket from a line running across the room, if necessary, but don’t bring them into bed with you if you can avoid it.

-If baby’s tired and cranky, you’re going to have a lousy time. Sticking to the schedule is ideal, but if you cannot, try to fit the naps and bedtime as close as possible. Keeping baby well-rested will assure that the time you do get to spend with friends and family is fun, happy and relaxed.

-Bring along baby’s blanket, lovie and sleeping clothes. Anything that smells familiar and reminds them of their home sleeping environment will help them get to sleep in their new surroundings.

-One off day of sleep won’t ruin your child’s sleep. Plan for buffer days (the day before and after) to honor their normal sleep. This will ensure their circadian rhythm doesn’t go completely awry.

Remember, these are averages based on age. Sleep is not a one-size-fits-all, so you may need to adjust these to meet your child’s needs.

Want to know what I look for to find the sweet spot for a baby’s wake time?

How long it takes them to fall asleep!
If baby falls asleep in under 5 minutes, there’s a good chance overtiredness is setting in. In this case, cut back 15 minutes.
If baby takes longer than 20 minutes to fall asleep, they could be over or under tired. If this is the case, look at overall sleep and temperament of your child when laying them down.

I shoot for 5-15 minutes of time for baby to fall asleep with very little or no crying.

What’s scarier than Halloween? If you are a parent, hands down it’s Daylight Savings.

It’s happening anyway this weekend on November 2nd. So here’s what you can do to help your little one adjust.

There is a more detailed description in my blog (link at bottom) with examples of schedules. But here is a quick run down.

For younger babies following wake windows, delay the time you get them up in the morning by 15 minutes which will then push naps and bedtime back 15 minutes as well. Every few days, jump another 15 minutes. It’s most ideal to start this about before daylight savings so that when it actually hits, you’ll be shifted the hour or just about there.

For older babies on a set schedule and older children, start just a few days before DLS with jumping 30 minutes. That means you won’t get them up and out of bed in the morning until 30 minutes later than normal, even if they wake at the normal time. Nap and bedtime will shift back 30 minutes too. On the day of DLS, make the final 30 minute jump to get to the full hour and new time.

Halloween is only once a year and what kid doesn’t love going out after dark to snag all the candy? So, enjoy it and don’t stress about their sleep.

Here are some ways to help prepare and recover from trick-or-treat night.
1. If your child naps, let them nap longer that day. You can also push it back a bit so they will have more stamina to stay up late.
2. If your child doesn’t nap, see if you can add one on that day. Even a 20 minute car nap late afternoon can go a long way.
3. Recovery day- Plan on being home for naps and early bedtime the day after. This helps your child’s bio clock stay on track and make up for the little bit of sleep debt from the night before.
4. Monitor the candy intake. It’s ridiculous to say your child won’t eat any candy that night. Plan on it, but limit it. Going forward, keep candy at or before dinner so the sugar doesn’t counteract bedtime.

Remember, these are averages based on age. Sleep is not a one-size-fits all, so you may need to adjust these to meet your child’s needs. This does not factor in if your child was born prematurely.

We’ve all heard of cry-it-out.

Can it work?
Sometimes.

Is it the most effective way to help your child sleep better?
No.

I’ve found that teaching a child to sleep better has a whole lot more about what you change during their awake times, than leaving them to cry on their own at night.

Try these tweaks:
1. Fully awake feeds (bottle/nursing). Sleepy feeds can impact sleep later on.
2. Age appropriate wake windows- Baby needs to be awake long enough during the day to be able to sleep well at night and for naps. Comment “wake window” and your baby’s age if you aren’t sure what wake window to try with your little one.
3. Nap & Bedtime Routines that end with laying baby down awake- The art of mastering falling asleep initially on their own can help them connect sleep cycles during the night.
