Is it just me or are holiday parties always scheduled during nap or bedtime?!?!
Don’t worry, here’s how you go to the party and adjust your child’s sleep.
1. Buffer days. You know it’s coming. So, plan on having low key days at home the day before and possible to optimize sleep.
2. Stretch or shrink wake time. If timing makes sense, have baby take a nap slightly early that day. It’s okay that it will be shorter...you can always add in another catnap or early bedtime. On the other end, stretch how long they are awake and plan for the car nap on the way home. Now you may need to just call it bedtime if this missed nap goes late enough into the day, or push bedtime back if it’s still too early but they get a late catnap.
3. Monitor sugar and stimulation. The longer your child is around the festive chaos without a nap, the more manic behavior and big feelings show up. If you have a younger one, consider being the one that holds them when they’ve hit their limit instead of other people at the party. And back off that sugar before it’s time to go...you won’t want a sugar high if you are banking on them to sleep in the car.
Happy holidays!
