We are proud to be one of 600+ businesses in the Ohio Business Competes, a coalition of businesses committed to extending civil rights protections for employment, housing, and public accommodations in Ohio to everyone in the LGBTQ community. We encourage other businesses to join us and help bring equality to Ohio. It’s good for businesses. It’s good for employees. It’s good for families. It’s good for Ohio.

Thinking out loud this morning. Maybe you are too.

Streams of consciousness fueled by coffee and focused on helping you and your company accelerate your efforts, increase your potential and achieve your goals.

2018 is coming at us quickly! Get ready if you’re not. For the last several years, we’ve issued a challenge to those of you reading our posts. How did you do with the 2017 Challenge?

In 2018, we need more, so we’re ramping it up. Here you go:

In 2018, we are challenging all of you to:

1) Look for the good in our world and promote it. It’s easy to find stuff that makes us mad. Do a little more work. Find the small thing. Share it. Promote others more than you do yourself. You’ll feel better (and people will like you more - that’s the bonus package!).

2) Make your staff your biggest fans. You can probably create a narrative that impresses people who don’t spend every day with you. Can you excite and consistently impress your employees who see you at your best and worst? We’re not talking about buying their loyalty. We’re talking about being employers of integrity - doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. You’ll know you’ve got it right when your employees can’t stop raving about how much they love their jobs.

3) Reach out to one other business owner and offer help. It might look like a listening ear, helping them network, sharing a resource or giving valuable advice you’ve gathered in your journey. The key is that “help” is defined by the person you are helping. Plenty of people just want to talk and share what they know. That’s not help.

4) Learn something. Look at a problem you faced and how you approached it. What would you do differently? How could it impact your approach and results? How might you apply that new learning to your future actions? If you feel you’ve arrived and know it all, you’re the person people are pointing at, talking about and laughing at. You just don’t know it.

5) Meet other business owners with no expectation of them benefitting you or helping you build your business. You may learn something or develop an authentic relationship. Those are good things. What Have You Done For Me Lately is a Janet Jackson song, not a motto for 2018.

We’re keeping it brief in 2018. We want to avoid excuses for not even taking the challenge. So, that’s it! Are you up for the challenge?

These days, it feels like there's a lot of dark in our world. For many of our clients, friends and those we serve, 2017 has not been an easy year. Fear, budget cuts and uncertainty have loomed large and many of the social justice causes and warriors we work to support have had to fight and fight and...

Thought this was interesting. You may too as you think about growing your business.

Values matter. We’ve said it before in posts, but your company‘s values are a great and free way to differentiate from your competition. With a world that seems a little crazier each day, values - what we believe in and are willing to stand up for - can demonstrate hope.

Here’s how Purdue’s Men’s basketball team is using their values to project what they believe the world needs more of right now.

How do you project your company’s values? Do you? Should you?

Maybe now, more than ever, we need companies that stand for something beyond capitalism.

The Boilermakers wanted people to know that they're thinking about more than basketball, so the players picked words to display on their shooting shirts, sending a message about such values as tolerance, unity and togetherness.

When it comes to passive aggressive behavior, if someone can’t give their problem voice, don’t give it your time.

This has been a topic of discussion with several clients and their teams this week, so I thought I'd share it. Maybe it will help some of you and your teams.

There is a difference between venting and bitching. Those two words are not synonyms.

Venting focuses on issues.

Bitching focuses on people.

If someone is venting, as a supervisor or teammate, you can ask them what they or the team should do about the problem to resolve it.

If someone is bitching, as a supervisor or teammate, you should direct them to have a conversation with the person who is the subject of their bitching.

Venting can be healthy. Say something once and let it go, or say it, then fix it.

Bitching destroys teams. Allow it to continue, and you will see cliques form, tension rise among individuals and trust erode (I mean, if you'll talk to me about someone else, you'll talk about me to someone else.).

Bitching...don't do it and don't tolerate it. Any questions?
