SABBATH
one of my favorite books from Shalem's Soul of Leadership program was "Sabbath" by Wayne Mueller. I remember Wayne and an earlier book of his "Legacy of the Heart" - his serene nature perfectly presents ways to consider and create Sabbath in our lives.

Summer is the perfect season to rest, restore, renew and relax. I think of REST as Relaxed, Effortless & Easy Sacred Time. I hope you can keep yourself from burn-out and create longer stretches of REST for yourself. (before Labor Day hits!)

Megan Devine's work serves as a grounded, honest guidebook on how to navigate and be present with grief - it can absolutely support anyone who is IN IT.

I've just started Francis Weller's book, and already I can tell it is beautifully crafted.....offering comfort, solace and wisdom in a language that deeply resonates with the heart and soul.

If you know anyone who is in pain, who is suffering loss, these are 2 excellent resources that can walk alongside the weary soul.

ANCESTORS!!!
I'm always working on a family history project - and this week what I am uncovering is blowing me away, truly! To know and touch the origins.....the joy and sorrow.....the courageous moments.....the transitions.....the strength and the weaknesses.
It is beyond words.

This poem by Drew Jackson came across my desktop today, may it inspire you to discover more.

Of Earth and Sky
Let me tell you about the ancestors,
she said to me as I sat and relaxed
myself into Grandma’s lap. She was
sharp, and even in her old age
her memory could search
into the far reaches of the past.
I can’t stay up too late, not like I used to.
And then she proceeded to tell me tales
of Greats and Great Greats who did some
great and not-so-great things. Our family
tree is filled with triumph and struggle.
The imperfections make it beautiful.
They’re all just human, you know, just like you.
She poked her frail finger into the flesh of my pectoral.
My kin, of the earth—the humus—yet filled with the breath
of God. Is this not what it means to be adam?
Never forget who you come from,
she said before calling it a night. Her words
implied that this sort of remembrance
would keep me grounded, but also keep me going.
Soaring high when they try to keep me down.
I won’t forget that I am of earth and sky.

Dandelion
You grow in a crack in the sidewalk,
neither asking nor receiving hospitality.
Spreading your arms out
to what the city will give you of the sun,
reaching your roots down unseen,
patient among slabs and pipes and gravel,
you find a way to nourish yourself.
You gather yourself into this one simple blossom,
not a big one, but yellow in a desert of gray.
And what is it worth?

A guy comes along, distracted,
maybe troubled even, looking down.
He stops, sits on a cement block,
and stares at you. He tilts his head
as if reading something. After a long time
gazing at you he makes a single sound,
“mm,” and something that could be
a smile comes to his face.
He looks at the sky, takes a breath, gets up,
and walks off, somehow different.

You never know.
