In the recycling of aluminum and steel cans, cans are first cut into little pieces to lessen the overall volume. The pieces are then cleaned and blocked to minimize oxidation losses when melted. Finally, the blocks are loaded into the furnace and heated to 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit to product molten metal.

Are you aware that recycled metal does not lose any of its original properties during the reclamation process? It can be reused indefinitely, saving valuable resources. This is true for metals such as copper, brass, steel, iron, and even auto parts.

Recycling matters. Americans deposit more than 120,000 aluminum cans into the recycling stream every minute of the day. As a result, nearly two out of three cans are reprocessed, and nearly 66 percent of all American aluminum is produced from recycled metal.

One of the major benefits of recycling metal is that it conserves natural resources. In fact, recycling one ton of steel will conserve 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone. Likewise, recycling a ton of aluminum conserves as many as 8 tons of bauxite ore.

When it comes to recycling, metal materials are quite flexible and can be recycled over and over without degrading any of their original properties. In fact, metals from secondary sources are considered to be just as good as metals that come from primary sources.

Did you know that steel recycling alone saves enough energy annually to supply the city of Los Angeles with almost 10 years of electricity? Now we can get some idea of big the impact recycling metals can have.

When it comes down to it, the dumping of metal in landfills has a large impact on the environment due to the dispersal of metallic particles in the ecosystem. By recycling metals and keeping them out of the waste stream, important conservation takes place.
