As we celebrate the unofficial start to summer, let's take a moment to reflect and honor the true meaning behind this holiday.

Wishing everyone a safe Memorial Day.

When was the last time anyone took a full look at how your building is performing? For a lot of facility teams, the answer is "right before peak season started," which is usually too late to act on what you find.

Late May offers a better window. Heating demand has dropped. Cooling has not fully ramped. The systems are quieter, schedules are stable, and there is enough runway to actually adjust something before summer hits. It is a planning moment more than an emergency one, and that makes it valuable.

💡 Energy efficiency in commercial buildings does not usually come from one big project. It comes from steady attention to how a building actually uses energy day to day, and the small adjustments that follow.

📖 This Business Focus piece walks through where waste typically hides, why audits are still the most reliable starting point, and how to plan upgrades alongside routine maintenance instead of waiting for a major overhaul. A quick read for anyone managing a commercial space.https://businessfocusmagazine.com/2026/04/30/energy-efficiency-strategies-for-modern-commercial-buildings/

Energy efficiency grows from consistent, practical decisions rather than one major upgrade.

Knowing how your building actually uses energy is the first step toward managing it better. This month's tip is a practical one for anyone responsible for a facility.

🏛️ A community center that runs hot in one room and cold in another. A recreation building with HVAC that won't quiet down. A library where the bill keeps climbing with no clear reason. These are the signals public facility teams know well, and they almost always point to a project worth doing.

📋 The challenge is knowing where to start. An energy audit or Energy Plan turns those signals into a clear picture of what is happening, what is worth fixing, and what the savings will look like. For public sector teams trying to reduce operating costs without guesswork, it is often the most useful first step.

Energility provides actionable Energy Plans that reduce energy costs, improve building performance, and unlock measurable savings.

🌱 More and more yards are getting re-imagined this time of year. Less grass, more garden beds, fewer pesticides, less mowing. It's a shift a lot of people are quietly making, and you don't need an expensive kit to start. You can work with what you already have and build from there.

A patch of native plants instead of a corner of turf. A raised bed where the sprinkler used to run. None of it has to happen all at once, and none of it has to look like anyone else's yard. Mine certainly doesn't.

💧 One resource we have in Franklin County is the Community Backyards program which offers rebates on rain barrels, native plants, compost bins, and rain gardens (one per household, April through September): https://www.communitybackyards.org/

Developed by the City of Columbus and Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District in 2011, the GreenSpot Rain Barrel Program helps homeowners understand how stormwater runoff affects local water quality, streambank erosion and flooding.

🗳️ It's Primary Election Day in Ohio. Polls close at 7:30 PM tonight. Local primaries don't always get the attention of the big November races, but they shape a lot of what happens close to home — schools, services, and the people who'll be on your ballot in the fall.

✅If you haven't yet, take a few minutes today. Find your polling place at https://www.ohiosos.gov/directories/find-my-polling-location.
