A new strain of ransomware, a Petya-esque variant being called Petya/NotPetya, is swiftly spreading across the globe today, impacting tens of thousands of computers as of 2:00 p.m., PST. More powerful, professional, and dangerous than last month's WanaCrypt0r attack, the Petya-esque ransomware uses the same EternalBlue exploit to target vulnerabilities in Microsoft's operating system. However, unlike WanaCrypt0r, this ransomware instructs you to reboot your computer and then locks up your entire system. Long story short: if you get this infection, you're hosed.
We're alerting you to reassure you that if you're currently using the premium version (or the premium trial) of Malwarebytes with real-time protection turned on, you are protected from this threat. Our premium technology blocks the Peyta-inspired ransomware before it can encrypt your system. (The free version of Malwarebytes, however, does not protect you against this attack. To see which version you have, open up your Malwarebytes software and look for the version name at the top of the window.)
If you're not currently using the premium version of Malwarebytes, we recommend that you update your Microsoft Windows software immediately. recommend that you update your Microsoft Windows software immediately. Microsoft released a patch for this vulnerability in March. You may access the patch here. We also recommend you be extra vigilant about opening emails, as one suspected method for spreading this infection is through infected Office documents delivered via spam.
If you're thinking about paying the ransom for this threat ($300 in Bitcoin per PC)—don't bother. The email service that hosted the address where victims were instructed to send payment has closed the account. So at this point trying to pay the ransom will result in a returned email. However, the attackers may provide their victims with alternative forms of payment transactions.
Cyberattacks at a global scale seem to be happening more and more frequently. At Malwarebytes, we pledge to keep our customers and readers informed. Your safety is our number one priority.
Sincerely,
The Malwarebytes team

Is Malware Protection enough?
Unfortunately, that is not true. It is not "fully capable" as there are services in an Anti Virus that are not fulfilled by MBAM.

• It does not target scripted malware
• It does not target document files
• It does not target media files
• It is still incapable of of removing malicious code that had been prepended, appended or cavity injected into legitimate files such as by a file infecting virus or by a trojan that trojanizes legitimate files ( aka; patches ).
• It is not MAPI and/or VIM compliant nor does it offer a POP/IMAP Proxy Service.
• It does not handle legacy malware because Malwarebytes personnel culls it database periodically and only tragets what they call Zero Day malware. Malware that is fresh and new Today and not something that was more prevalent a year or two ago.

An anti virus may intercept email and it will then decode the MIME and scan the body and attachments and flag the email as a Phish, Fraud or some other malicious content. MBAM may have and Anti Exploit module but that is for software exploitation. It does NOTHING for Social Engineering which is the Human Exploit such as those demonstrated in Fraud and Phishing emails.
If one ONLY depends on MBAM they lose the warnings made by traditional anti virus applications that performs scanning the file types MBAM does not target. They lose a layer of protection that an AV provides. So if one has a folder of Wimad trojans and only MBAM is installed, the computer user will never know. However if they had a fully installed Anti Virus solution performing "On Access" and "On Demand scanning on ALL file types, there would be a warning the files are malicious. This an indicator. MBAM will only protect one IFF they try to play a media file and it attempts some not standard media player function. MBAM will not tell you that is a malicious HyperText Application, or that XLS uses malicious macros or that MP3 is a Wimad or that web site has an Embedded IFrame.

It is disingenuous to make a claim that MBAM 3.0 is a replacement. It is still an adjunct anti malware application because it lacks many constructs that a traditional anti virus application employs.

Speed, or affordability? This is the question that you should be asking when determining what kind of hard drive you need. SSDs, or Solid State Drives, offer much faster speeds, and better reliability than standard Hard Drives. This means that with an SSD you can turn on your computer in seconds, rather than minutes. In fact, SSDs perform 6 to 10 times faster than a standard HDD. Although, they do come at a much higher price. Fortunately for you, we provide both! Whatever your needs are, Midwest Computer Solutions is happy to help you fill them!

DID YOU KNOW? Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems are no longer being supported by Microsoft. If you have an older PC, you may be running one of these operating systems! These older PCs generally cannot just be “upgraded” to the newest operating system due to older hardware restrictions. Recently, there has been a few updates to these older operating system because of all the recent cyber-attacks. These updates were rolled out due to special circumstances, so don’t expect there to be any more updates for these older operating systems. We strongly recommend thinking about upgrading your system if you are still using these unsupported operating systems. Contact us for help or to talk about upgrade options today!
