Where does your phone sleep at night?

For a lot of us it's on the bed, under the pillow, or tucked into the couch cushions after the last episode. Those are the three spots fire safety folks ask you to skip. A charging battery gets warm, and soft bedding holds that heat in.

It's Fire Prevention Week, and this year it's all about safe charging. The fix is small. Charge on a hard surface like a nightstand or dresser. Use the charger that came with the device, or a replacement with a safety certification mark on the box. Unplug it once it's full.

While you're up, press the test button on the hallway smoke alarm. It takes ten seconds.

Quick question. Is your Wi-Fi password still the one printed on the sticker under the router?

If it is, think about who's had it since. Guests. The sitter. Your kids' friends. Whoever came to fix the dishwasher. It might be taped inside a kitchen cabinet right now.

That same Wi-Fi carries your doorbell and your cameras, the things you count on to keep an eye on the house.

Fixing it is a Saturday-morning job. Set up a guest network, so visitors never touch the one your cameras use. Change the main password, then reconnect your cameras and doorbell to it. And turn on automatic updates for the router if it offers them.

Most camera systems get planned around two spots. The front entrance, and wherever the money is.

That's not wrong. It's just not finished.

Walk your building and ask a different question. Which door does the delivery driver use? Which one does a contractor prop open with a bucket on a hot day? Which one did the guy who quit in March still have a key to?

Those are usually the doors with no camera on them, because nobody was thinking about doors when the system went in. They were thinking about the register.

You don't have to cover everything. You do need to know which door you'd want footage from if something happened, and whether you'd have it.

Your newest security camera keeps going offline. The older ones are fine. What gives?

A lot of the time it isn't the camera. In many buildings, the network cable running to each camera carries its power too, and all of that power comes from one switch in a closet. That switch has a limit.

Every camera added since the system went in draws a little more from the same supply. Eventually the last one plugged in comes up short and drops out at random. A new camera won't fix that, because the camera was never the problem.

So before you replace anything, ask one question: when cameras were added, did anyone recheck the power on the switch?

September is National Preparedness Month, and most of what it asks for doesn't cost anything.

Here's a version that fits at your kitchen table in about twenty minutes.

Pick the spot outside where everyone meets. The mailbox, the neighbor's driveway, the big oak in the yard. Say it out loud so the kids can repeat it back to you.

Pick one person out of town that everybody calls if the phones here are a mess. Grandparents are good at this.

Decide who gets the kids if you're both stuck at work. Then actually tell that person.

Write it on an index card and put it on the fridge.

That's the whole thing. No app, no purchase, no system required. Do it this weekend and it's done.

Storms take the power out. So what happens to your alarm when they do?

Usually it keeps working for a while. Most systems have a backup battery in the panel, and a lot of them talk to the monitoring center over a cell connection instead of your internet. That part is on purpose.

What people miss is the battery. It doesn't last forever, and at year six it doesn't hold what it held at year one. If yours has never been replaced and the system isn't new, that's a before-the-storm job, not a during-the-storm one.

So, two minutes of homework this week. Find out how old your backup battery is, and whether your system reports over cell or over your Wi-Fi.

If you own a building with sprinklers, that system has a schedule. Most owners know one line of it, which is the annual.

There's more above it. Some checks come weekly or monthly, some quarterly, some annually, and some only come around every five years. Which ones apply depends on the type of system you have and what your local fire marshal requires.

Here's the practical part. The tags hanging on your riser are the record. If the only dates on them are twelve months apart, something in the cycle is being missed, and the first person to notice will probably be an inspector.

Worth pulling those tags and reading them before somebody else does.

Ask your kids tonight: if the smoke alarm goes off, how do you get out of your bedroom?

Most will say the door. That's the right first answer. The trouble is that the door is sometimes the one way you can't go.

So here's the drill, and it takes about ten minutes.

Two ways out of every room. The door, and a window everyone can reach and open. Actually try the window. Some of them are painted shut and nobody finds out until it matters.

One meeting place outside. The mailbox, the neighbor's driveway, somewhere specific enough that a six-year-old can name it.

Then walk it once with the lights off.

You don't need a system to do any of that tonight. You just need a plan your family has walked, not one you've talked about.

Your alarm goes off at 2 a.m. What happens next?

Here's the honest walkthrough, because knowing it beforehand beats any feature list.

The panel sends a signal to the monitoring center. An operator sees it, along with which sensor tripped and where in your house it is. They call you first. If you answer and give your passcode, it stops there. False alarms happen, and that's fine.

If you don't answer, or the passcode isn't right, they contact your local dispatch and pass along what they know.

That's the sequence. No mystery, no guessing.

The worst time to learn how your system works is while it's going off. Take five minutes this week and make sure everyone in the house knows the passcode.

Here's something most of us never think about until it matters.

Backflow happens when water in a pipe reverses and starts flowing the wrong way. If there's a cross-connection in the system, contaminated water can flow back into the clean supply. Rare, and serious enough that the plumbing codes are built around preventing it.

That's why backflow preventers exist, and why they get tested regularly. Small, unglamorous hardware doing quiet, important work, the same mindset we bring to fire protection every day.
