What’s happening with employment among people with disabilities?

The September 2026 National Trends in Disability Employment (nTIDE) Jobs Report issued by Kessler Foundation, found that the employment-to-population ratio for people with disabilities ages 16–64 reached 39.8% in August, tying the all-time high set in November 2025. The labor force participation rate also reached a new all-time high of 43.4%.

At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Disability Resource Center works with about 2,000 students each academic year across roughly 4,000 courses. Services include testing accommodations, assistive technology, accessible course materials, alternative formats, communication access, and spaces designed to reduce distractions during exams.

The center’s work goes beyond providing accommodations. It helps students understand their options, navigate college systems, connect with campus resources, and build self-advocacy skills. For students transitioning from K-12 education to college, where they take a more active role in requesting accommodations, that knowledge can be an important part of accessing their education.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)!

This year's theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” recognizes the skills and contributions people with disabilities bring to workplaces, communities, and the economy.

And the numbers show just how important that workforce is.

In August 2026, 6.8 million people with disabilities ages 16–64 were working.

This month, we're celebrating the people behind that number and the value they bring to the workforce.

People with disabilities not have to repeatedly prove that their disabilities are real in order to access accommodations, benefits, education, healthcare, or other supports.

Too often, systems rely on extensive documentation, repeated verification, and assumptions that people may be exaggerating or misrepresenting their needs. This can be especially challenging for people with non-apparent or fluctuating disabilities.

"Former Paralympic swimmer, architect, and accessibility consultant Ileana Rodriguez is bringing her lived experience and professional expertise to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As vice president of Paralympic Strategy and Relations for LA28, Rodriguez is working to ensure the Paralympic Games are not treated as an afterthought, but as an equal part of the Los Angeles Olympic experience.

Her work is a reminder that meaningful accessibility starts with including people with disabilities in the decisions that affect them from the start.
