When every day feels like a fight for survival, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by everything that needs attention. The problems pile up, the decisions keep coming, and you can find yourself working harder without feeling like you're moving forward.

Instead of trying to fix everything at once, ask yourself one powerful question:

What is the ONE thing I can do today that will make the biggest difference tomorrow?

Maybe it's having a difficult conversation you've been avoiding. Maybe it's correcting a broken process, delegating something that shouldn't be on your plate, addressing a profitability problem, developing a team member, following up on opportunities, or finally making a decision you've continued to postpone.

Identify the action with the greatest potential impact—and do it.

Success doesn't always come from making massive changes overnight. Often, it comes from consistently making the right decisions, taking focused action, and creating small improvements that compound over time.

Stop fighting every battle at once. Focus on what matters most. Take action today that creates a better tomorrow.

The impact we have on others can last far longer than the moment.

Every day, through our words, actions, leadership, and attitude, we have a choice. We can lift people up or tear them down. We can encourage growth or create discouragement. We can leave a positive mark—or leave a scar.

Great leaders understand that success isn't only measured by what they personally accomplish. It is also measured by what they help others become.

Encourage people when they're struggling. Recognize their accomplishments. Challenge them to grow. Share your knowledge. Provide opportunities. Help them see potential in themselves that they may not yet recognize.

Whether you're a business owner, manager, coworker, mentor, friend, or family member, strive to leave people better because you were part of their lives.

Lift others up. Bring out their best. Leave a positive mark.

That's a legacy worth building.

Building a great team is about more than filling open positions—it’s about building careers and developing people for the future.

When someone chooses to join your company, what opportunity are you giving them? Are you simply providing a paycheck, or are you providing a path to develop new skills, increase their earning potential, earn certifications, take on greater responsibility, and advance into leadership?

The best employees want to know there is a future ahead of them. Show them what that future can look like.

Invest in training. Provide mentorship. Establish a clear career path. Recognize achievement. Develop future leaders. Most importantly, create a culture where people feel respected, challenged, supported, and proud to be part of the team.

Great companies don't just hire people—they develop people.

When you help employees build successful careers, you're doing more than building a stronger workforce. You're shaping futures, strengthening your company, and building your legacy.

Ask yourself today:

How are you building a career for those who join your team?

Reducing waste is one of the fastest ways to improve profitability and grow EBITDA.

Every wasted labor hour, unnecessary truck roll, callback, inefficient route, purchasing mistake, unproductive meeting, poorly managed lead, and job that wasn't priced correctly takes money away from the bottom line.

The goal isn't simply to cut costs. The goal is to identify activities and expenses that consume resources without creating value for the customer or the company.

Think about it this way:

Waste Dollars → Profit Dollars

When you identify, track, measure, and eliminate unnecessary waste, those dollars can flow directly toward improved profitability and stronger EBITDA.

For home-service companies, start asking:

Where are we wasting time? Where are we wasting materials? Where are we creating rework? Where are our processes breaking down? Where are dollars leaving the business without producing a return?

You may not need dramatically more revenue to dramatically improve your bottom line. Sometimes the opportunity is already inside your business—you simply need to plug the profit leaks.

Reduce the waste. Improve the processes. Grow the EBITDA.

HIGH REVENUE DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN HIGH PROFIT!

A business can generate impressive sales and still struggle to produce the profit the owner expects.

So where did the profit go?

Very often, it's leaking out through WASTE.

Waste doesn't always appear as one big expense on your financial statement. Instead, it happens a little at a time, every day:

💧 Inefficient routing and unnecessary drive time
💧 Rework and callbacks
💧 Underpricing
💧 Poor lead qualification
💧 Low average tickets
💧 Inventory and material waste
💧 Employees working in the wrong roles
💧 Poor productivity and wasted labor hours
💧 Inefficient or nonexistent processes

Individually, these losses may seem insignificant. But when they happen day after day, job after job, and employee after employee, they can drain thousands—or even hundreds of thousands—of dollars from your bottom line.

Top-line revenue may get the attention, but bottom-line profit determines the health of the business.

Managers must learn to TRACK IT. MEASURE IT. IDENTIFY IT. ELIMINATE IT.

You cannot manage what you don't measure, and you cannot eliminate waste you haven't identified.

📘 MANAGERS: Get a copy of Jerry Isenhour's book, Where Did The Profit Go? It is available at the following link: https://www.amazon.com/Where-Did-Profit-Processes-Profitability-ebook/dp/B0CK59BP6D/ref=sr_1_3?crid=29NEAULJV7HC4&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hap5BGmT644YBazLnYMZh-kLV9hYZt8vGEboAQ6K3fq18Vgm9PhW2U_JdoSOf2zv3dkHXIzReM8ta7AEcnEKsg862ChSSaiqrkAeDjuNHPqS5Ap8bQ0fL28cCkqhexYC_Ad5lvRByqcWSC2N_ll971PrSJ2GWD76s5f1mKvkCU1O5Q_G6reVAkvgvZ_K8iGngeehfK2oMRI-7vlaOCPgfRLeU_nmlEew81U6d6WYolg.XpE-Eyy5cSe4BvhXzpTfhQkgIisOQpmeE5LlZLomRPk&dib_tag=se&keywords=where+did+the+profit+go&qid=1788172074&sprefix=where+did+the+profit+go%2Caps%2C158&sr=8-3

The book provides a process for managers and business owners to track, measure, identify, and eliminate the waste that is stealing profits from their businesses.

Before assuming you need more leads, more customers, more trucks, or more revenue, ask yourself:

How much of the money we're already generating is leaking out through waste?

Sometimes the fastest way to increase profitability isn't generating another dollar of revenue.

It's keeping more of the dollars you're already earning.

🔧 Find the leaks.
📊 Measure the waste.
🔨 Fix the processes.
💰 Keep more of your profit.

Plugging the leaks is critical for success!

Opportunities rarely show up perfectly packaged and waiting for us. More often, we create them through action, persistence, preparation, and the willingness to move forward when others hesitate.

In business, waiting for the “right opportunity” can mean waiting forever.

Want more customers? Create the opportunity by becoming more visible in your market.
Want better employees? Create a company people want to join.
Want higher sales? Create stronger relationships and deliver greater value.
Want growth? Build the systems, people, and leadership needed to support it.

Successful people don't simply wait for doors to open.

They build the door.

Look at what you want to accomplish and ask yourself:

What opportunity can I create TODAY that moves me closer to where I want to be TOMORROW?

Take the initiative. Do the work. Make the call. Start the conversation. Step out of your comfort zone!

Opportunities don't just happen—you have to create them!

“I CAN’T FIND GOOD PEOPLE!”

How many times have we heard a home-service business owner say that?

But perhaps we need to turn the question around:

What if good people simply CAN’T FIND US?

You can post jobs. You can run recruiting ads. You can offer competitive pay. But today's workforce—especially younger people entering the job market—is looking for more than another job.

They're looking for an opportunity and a future.

If we want to attract the next generation into the skilled trades, home-service companies need to show candidates what that future can look like:

🔧 Professional training
🔧 A great company culture
🔧 Competitive earning opportunities
🔧 Certifications and skill development
🔧 Mentorship and leadership
🔧 A defined career path
🔧 Opportunities for advancement
🔧 Work they can take pride in

Maybe it's time to stop saying:

“We need somebody to fill this position.”

And start saying:

“We want to help somebody build a career.”

Recruiting has become marketing. Your future employees are evaluating your company just like prospective customers are.

Why should a talented young person choose YOUR company?

If you can't clearly answer that question, neither can the person you're trying to recruit.

Learn why young people aren't choosing the trades, why traditional recruiting isn't producing the results many companies need, and what home-service business owners can do to attract, train, develop and retain the next generation of professionals.

Don't just fill jobs. Build careers.
Don't just hire employees. Develop your future leaders.

Ask almost any home-service business owner what one of their biggest challenges is today, and you'll hear:

“Finding good people!”

But maybe we need to ask a different question:

Why aren't more young people choosing the skilled trades as a career?

For decades, young people have often been encouraged to pursue college while careers in the trades were presented as a second choice. At the same time, many home-service companies have been advertising jobs when they should be marketing careers and futures.

On the next CVC Home Service Success Network, we're going to discuss what home-service business owners can do to change that.

We'll explore:

Why young people often overlook careers in the trades
Why parents can play an important role in career decisions
How to change the perception of skilled-trade careers
Why companies should hire for character and train for skill
How to create a career ladder young employees can see
The importance of training, mentorship and advancement
Why your company culture affects recruiting
How to create an Employee Value Proposition
Why recruiting today is really another form of marketing
How we can start building tomorrow's technicians today

The future of the trades isn't something we can simply wait for.

We have to build it!

Stop looking for people to simply fill trucks.

Start giving talented young people an opportunity to build a career, develop valuable skills, become leaders and create a future they can be proud of.
