This American Rivers presentation on the birth of the environmental movement following the Cuyahoga River fires is inspiring and outlines much of what has motivated our work in the Monongahela River Valley.
In particular, the final call to action offered confirmation of the objectives of the Mon River Towns Program (www.monrivertowns.com) .....Broaden connections with neighbors upstream and down. We need to bring more local leaders and community-based groups together so that communities can develop and be champions for solutions that benefit their neighborhoods and city.

It's rewarding to see the hard work of the folks in Etna, along with Millvale and Sharpsburg, recognized as "hot" neighborhoods. Far from "overnight" sensations, all three communities have worked tirelessly to meet the challenges of past flooding, improve streetscapes, restore buildings, attract business and engage community. This recognition by NextPittsburgh is well deserved.

McCollom Development Strategies/River Towns Program is proud to have worked with Pennsylvania Environmental Council, the Etna Economic Development Corporation and Mary Ellen Ramage, Borough Manager, over the last several years. Initiatives have included the development of their Riverfront Park and Trail, gateway signage, the Butler Street Mural and a comprehensive business attraction strategy.

Etna is definitely HOT!

Very good news revealed in this recent study. It articulates the reason why outdoor recreation is so important to the economies of smaller communities. Many of the towns where we work were once based on extraction-based industries like coal mining. Although not replacing the impact of these industries for job creation, outdoor recreation does have great and growing value.

A federal government analysis of outdoor recreation’s economic impact reaffirms what many conservation groups have said for decades: Outdoor recreation is a big business.

I often review what @ as most of their articles are thoughtful and relevant to the work we do. This one was of particular interest as I too had not thought about the "invisible cyclists".

another great event on the beautiful Mon River!

By Christen M. Stroh On August 6, Mon River Towns, a non-profit focused on helping local communities recognize the river as an economic and community asset, partnered with Venture Outdoors to offer a float trip down the Monongahela River.

In our work, the support of regional papers is so important to engage others and spread the word about our collective work. We appreciate the strong and consistent coverage in the Mon River Valley.

Communities that border the Monongahela River are working together to attract residents and visitors to a regional hub of activities and outdoor recreation in one vicinity.

We are enjoying working with the Redbank Valley Trail and Armstrong Trail communities. What an engaged group of people.
