“Round one” of fertilizers usually refers to the first application in a yearly lawn care schedule, especially in early spring. It’s often part of a multi-step program and it typically includes:
1. Pre-emergent herbicide – to prevent weeds like crabgrass before they germinate.
2. Nitrogen-rich fertilizer – to wake the grass up from dormancy and promote green-up and early growth.

Timing: Usually applied when soil temps hit around 50–55°F (often when forsythia starts blooming or just as grass begins greening up).

Goal: Jump-start healthy lawn growth and stop early-season weeds before they get going.
