Halloween is approaching and should be fun for every child, and sometimes that means remembering that trick-or-treating may look a little different from one doorstep to the next.

Some children may be nonspeaking and unable to say “trick or treat.” Others may avoid eye contact, feel overwhelmed by costumes, lights or sounds, prefer not to wear a costume, or need a little extra time at the door.

You may also see children carrying blue Halloween buckets, which some families use to indicate that a child has autism . However, not every child with autism will carry one, so the best approach is simple: welcome every trick-or-treater with patience, understanding, and kindness.

No child should have to communicate, behave, or experience Halloween a certain way to be included in the fun.

The more we learn about autism, the more we understand just how complex and individual it truly is.

New research highlighted by Autism Speaks is offering another piece of that puzzle. Researchers studying genomic data from more than 17,000 people identified changes involving a non-coding gene that may be associated with certain traits related to autism, including differences in social and repetitive behaviors.

While this research does not point to a single cause of autism, discoveries like these can deepen our understanding of its complex biology and potentially help shape how autistic individuals are supported in the future.
