💚 “It’s Just Aging” Can Miss the Real Story
One of the easiest mistakes families can make is assuming every change in an older adult is simply part of getting older. But sometimes a new change in mood or behavior is the body asking for attention.
If your loved one suddenly becomes more confused, unusually sleepy, irritable, withdrawn, restless, or “not themselves,” pause before assuming it is dementia getting worse. Sometimes the cause may be something else entirely:
* Pain they are not expressing clearly
* Dehydration
* Poor sleep
* A medication change
* Hearing or vision difficulties
* Infection or illness
* Constipation
* Hunger
* Too much noise or stimulation
* A major change in routine or environment
This is especially important for people living with dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or recovering from a stroke, because they may not always be able to explain what feels wrong. At Peak Homecare Associates, we encourage caregivers to become good observers.
Notice the change.
Ask what changed around the same time.
Look at the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
And when something feels suddenly different, communicate it to the family or healthcare provider.
Sometimes caregiving is not about having all the answers. Sometimes it is simply noticing that something is different before everyone else does.
✨ “A change in behavior can be a clue. Compassionate care pays attention.”
