We are profoundly saddened by the transitioning of our beloved Cousin, Etta Spain DeWitt, wife of James “JB” DeWitt. Cousin Etta Lee was a quiet strength, loving and supportive in her own unique way. She was an educator (librarian) par excellence and an entrepreneur who poured her heart into the family businesses. She could often be found at DeWitt’s Motel & Efficiencies, faithfully by her “JB’s” side, reflecting the beautiful bond of marriage and partnership they shared while keeping the business going.
I would often say to her that she was truly her mother, Cousin Rudell Spain’s daughter.
She was a true environmentalist meticulous and intentional, always with her thoughtfully written notes, errands, and grocery lists. Cousin Etta Lee was deeply committed to her daily devotions, praying throughout the day and finding joy in singing hymns and gospel songs.
She gave devoted care to her mother, and when Cousin JB became ill, even while facing her own health challenges, she along with the support of others remained steadfast, visiting him daily and spending countless hours at his bedside. Her articulate speech, sharp wit, and thorough nature never diminished, even as her hearing declined. Though life threw her a mighty curveball, she remained prayerfully assured that God would take care of her.
There has been no greater joy over the few years and more than to receive her calls and to simply love on my dear Cousin.
The pain of the last few years tried to rob her, the pressures of life weighed on her, overwhelming grief humbled her, and the stillness of her husband’s illness pushed her beyond her own strength. Yet, Cousin Etta Lee, you did not give up you fought for life, you endured, and in the end, you surrendered to rest. It hurts. We miss you. Yet, we release you. You served with great honor and strength your family, community, church, the educational system, “the Black Pearl,” and all you knew to do.
Our continual love, thoughts, and prayers are with Cousin James “JB” DeWitt, Sr., Nicole (Steve) DeWitt, McTere, Skylar, James Benjamin DeWitt III, Matthew Allen DeWitt, and our entire DeWitt, Spain, and extended families. With love, prayers, and deepest .....
