We get to work with clients all over the world that do the coolest things. One manufactures rain catch systems in Australia, another is an award-winning whiskey distillery, and a few of them do fine art photography portraits.

Look for PASSION

You want a passionate programmer. If they are passionate they will be significantly more effective than someone who is just after a paycheck.

This tip is often overlooked because it is right under our noses. 

FOLLOW YOUR GUT!!!

You can read a million Do's and Don'ts but at the end of the day if your instincts are telling you not to trust someone, listen to them. 

Alternatively, if someone does not fit the job description perfectly but you can't get them off of your mind then it may be worth giving them a chance. 

When was the last time you followed your gut and were rewarded for it?

What's the single best thing you can do in an interview with a developer? Be transparent!

Is there a major project your team is struggling with or some buggy code that needs to be rewritten? The developer your going to hire will eventually find out.

By giving the candidate an idea of what to expect early on, you will find the right fit for your company. By not being transparent, you increase the likelihood your new hire will become frustrated and walk out on the job.

You don't want to start over from scratch a month or two down the road, so be up front with what the job entails and what's expected.

You're interviewing a candidate for a developer position, things are going terrific and you're thinking this could be the one.

You go on to ask them a technical question thinking the candidate will breeze through it, but suddenly the red flags go up and the alarms start going off.

“How could they not know the answer?"
•
Believe it or not, you shouldn't be put off when a developer cannot answer certain technical questions off the top of their heads.
•
English professors encounter new words, Excel pros Google search formulas, and developers constantly learn new things.
•
One of the most important things you should be looking for in a developer is their eagerness to learn. You're better off hiring the candidate that has proven they're ambitious, self-taught, and is constantly growing, rather than the one that is stuck in their ways but just happened to know the answer to your question.

No, I’m not joking when I say immediately. Long gone are the days that you need to hire a software developer that has a college degree. You actually want the opposite. You want a problem solver, a self-learner, and someone that can think for themselves. The software world is constantly changing and you have to have your team keeping up with the best resources to write the code. In fact, companies like Google, Apple, Tesla, and many other large tech companies have removed requiring a college degree from their applications.

Last month I spoke at the National ACT-W Conference (in Portland, Oregon) on “How to Accelerate Your Career in Tech”.
