Wholesale inflation came in hotter than expected — and retail sales tell the second half of the story.
September producer prices rose 1.3% (6.3% year over year) — biggest monthly jump since March 2022, vs. ~0.5% expected. Energy led it (gasoline +20.3%); core also beat forecasts at +0.7%.
Retail sales rose 0.8%, but only ~0.25% once autos and gas stations are removed. The same fuel surge inflates both reports; underlying spending is softer.
For mortgages, the weekly average held steady: Freddie Mac puts the 30-year fixed at 7.40% this week, unchanged. But two hot inflation prints in two days keep upward pressure on rates. That is when lock timing matters.
If you are under contract or close to buying, let's talk about your lock today.
