Helping leaders reduce burnout & improve retention by understanding employee caregivers. Cornelius, NC

Using dessert as a leadership tool to challenge assumptions. No baking, decorating, kitchen or setup required.

I'm headed to the beach, baby!πŸ–οΈ Myrtle Beach, that is, on September 1 to speak for the SHRM Coastal Organization of Human Resources (COHR)!

I'll be presenting "Blending Support: Helping Employee Caregivers Thrive at Work and Stay Engaged", an interactive session that helps HR professionals look beyond changes in performance to better understand the hidden realities many employees are navigating.

Caregiving impacts employee engagement, retention, workplace culture, and business results, yet it's often invisible until someone takes the time to look deeper.

Shake the sand off your sandals, step away from the ocean for a couple of hours, and join us. And yes...there's dessert, but you'll have to join us on September 1 to find out why. πŸ˜‰

If you're in the Myrtle Beach area and work in HR or leadership, registration is still open. I'd love to have you join us!

Little Mama and Papa Kemp are the main characters in so many of my stories because, without walking their caregiving journeys alongside them, my mission to make the invisible workforce of employee caregivers impossible to ignore simply wouldn't exist.

I share my stories because they give voice to what millions of employee caregivers are living every single day.

That's why I'm honored to have been selected by the SHRM North Carolina State Council, Inc. to present at the 2026 North Carolina State Conference this September.

"Blending Support: Helping Employee Caregivers Thrive at Work and Stay Engaged" will explore one of today's most overlooked workforce challenges.

Your top performers may be caregiving on the clock.

Caregiving doesn't stay at home when employees come to work.

Behind strong performance may be an employee quietly balancing deadlines with doctor appointments, team meetings with caregiving responsibilities, and professional success with personal sacrifice.

Their performance didn't suddenly change. The context did.

When we replace assumptions with curiosity, we create workplaces where caregivers can thrive instead of simply survive.

Through an interactive experience (and yes...there will be dessert 🍰), we'll explore practical strategies HR professionals and leaders can use to better support employee caregivers while strengthening engagement, retention, and workplace culture.

A heartfelt thank you to the NCSHRM Conference Committee for this opportunity.

I'll be at the conference all three days, so if you're attending, I'd love to connect. Just look for someone who looks just like my headshot...wearing a chef jacket. πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸ³

I look forward to connecting with HR professionals from across North Carolina in September!

Most second jobs come with a paycheck.
This one doesn't.

Caregiving.

Millions of people spend their mornings, evenings, weekends, and lunch breaks caring for someone they love.

Then they go to work and try to act like everything is normal.

If you're seeing burnout, absenteeism, turnover, or declining engagement, caregiving may be part of the story.

This clip from my Beyond Burnout Masterclass explains why.

Most caregivers don't walk into work and announce:
"Good morning everyone. I spent my evening managing medications, coordinating appointments, and talking with doctors."

They just do it.

Then they log into work and try to perform like nothing happened.
That's why I call them the hidden workforce.
You can't support what you can't see.

This clip from my Beyond Burnout Masterclass explains why so many caregivers remain invisible at work.

When someone at work seems distracted, overwhelmed, or exhausted, what assumptions do we make?

Lack of focus?
Poor time management?
Burnout?
Sometimes.

But sometimes they're caring for a parent while trying to keep their career on track.

When employees are distracted, stressed, exhausted, or struggling to focus, leaders often assume it's a performance issue.

But what if it's a caregiving issue?

What if the employee who seems disengaged spent the night in the ER with a parent?
What if the employee missing deadlines is coordinating home health care between meetings?
What if the problem isn't motivation?

What if it's caregiving?

This clip is from my Beyond Burnout Masterclass and explores why caregiving isn't just a personal issue.
It's a workforce issue.

If you've ever helped a parent navigate a doctor's appointment, medication list, hospital stay, or difficult healthcare decision, you've seen the Silver Tsunami up close.

Every day, 10,000 Americans turn 65.
We've been hearing about the Silver Tsunami for years.

The problem?

Most people still think it's coming.
It's not.
It's here.

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be sharing a few short clips from my Beyond Burnout Masterclass.
Different topics. Same mission.

Helping organizations better understand the hidden workforce caring for loved ones while trying to succeed at work.

While many organizations are focused on recruitment, retention, and burnout, another challenge is quietly growing in the background.

Employees caring for aging parents.

The workforce is changing.

The question is whether employers are changing with it.

This clip is from my Beyond Burnout Masterclass and expands on themes we'll discuss during Beyond Burnout LIVE on June 25.

Beyond Burnout LIVE: Hidden Challenges Affecting Your Workforce

Your top performers may be caregiving on the clock.

On Thursday, June 25, I'm hosting a complimentary private preview event and inviting a limited number of guests to experience it firsthand.

Since pivoting from pastry chef to interactive keynote speaker, people have asked me the same question:

"How does a pastry chef use dessert as part of a keynote presentation?"

This is your chance to find out.

Burnout is visible. Caregiving often isn't.

What if one of your top performers is balancing a second job as a caregiver?

Using a real-world employee caregiving scenario, you'll get a behind-the-scenes look at how storytelling, experiential learning, and a pre-made dessert can help leaders move beyond assumptions and better understand what employees may be carrying behind the scenes.

If you lead people, support employees, influence workplace culture, or want to better understand what may be happening behind changes in employee performance, this event is for you.

Registration is complimentary, but space is limited.

Caregiving didn't end when I lost my mom. The story continues with my dad, Papa Kemp...

Caregiving taught me lessons I never expected about assumptions, resilience, leadership, and the hidden challenges people carry every day.

This clip is Part 2 of my story from the National Speakers Association's Last Story Standing speech.

πŸ’œ If you've ever cared for a parent, I'd love to hear what surprised you most about the experience.

One phone call changed everything.

I was in my bakery preparing a wedding order when the phone rang.

This clip is an excerpt from my NSA Carolinas Last Story Standing speech and shares a moment from the beginning of an unexpected 8.5-year caregiving journey with my parents.

Have you ever experienced a moment that changed the course of your life in an instant?
πŸ’œ

06/01/2026

Why is a pastry chef talking about caregiving?

Because caregiving changed my life.

After 8.5 years caring for both of my parents, I now help organizations better support employee caregivers.

This work is personal. πŸ’œ
