Obsidian was an important resource for the creation of stone tools in the past and was both traded as well as curated by native peoples across the west. This presentation briefly outlines using x-ray fluorescence to determine the source of obsidian based on its geochemical makeup. It then covers the distribution of commonly seen obsidian sources found in archaeological contexts within Grand Ronde's Ceded Lands via a series of generated maps. Source maps are based primarily on data gathered over the last 25 years by the Northwest Research Obsidian Studies Laboratory.

Here is a tip for anyone working with 3D scan data. When reconstructing XYZ files in Meshlab to meshes such as STL or PLY files, you should use a Ball Pivoting surface reconstruction, NOT a Poisson surface reconstruction. While faster, poisson reconstructions perform smoothing which alters can alter the scan geometry quite a bit. Also the poisson reconstruction tends to get REALLY buggy when working with large scan files.

Trick of the day: Wanting to fix a texture on your 3D scan that picked up some glare or reflections from a background? In gimp, use the color picker, click a region that has the hue you are trying to achieve, then use a soft paint brush with the mode set to hue with ~30% opacity on the areas that have problems
