Your solar company went out of business. Now what?

Your panels keep producing power, and your manufacturer warranties still apply. What you lose is the company that was supposed to service, monitor, and repair your system. Your next steps depend on where your project stands:

🏗️ Not yet installed: You’ll need a new installer to finish the job. Call your city building department and utility, since permits are usually tied to the original contractor.

🔌 Installed, no PTO: You’re close. A new installer can help you pass inspection and get the report to your utility. Inspections expire, so don’t wait.

✅ Installed with PTO: Gather your paperwork, confirm you can access monitoring through your equipment manufacturer, and line up someone to handle future repairs.

Prepaid solar deals can work well for homeowners. They just need to be sold the right way.

Every prepaid deal should follow five practices:
👉 Be transparent on pricing
👉 Clearly explain buyout mechanics
👉 Talk through what happens if the home sells
👉 Don’t overpromise savings or performance
👉 Make it clear who owns and services the system, short and long term

By the end of the conversation, the homeowner should know who owns the system, what the prepaid amount covers, their end-of-term options, and what service coverage exists.

43% of installers say prepaid providers are hard to vet or trust, according to Ohm Analytics.

That’s a real problem, because a prepaid lessor doesn’t disappear after the install. They own the system for the first five to six years, then ownership transfers to the homeowner. Whatever was promised at the kitchen table has to hold up through that handoff.
