On this day in 1944, Allied forces launched the largest amphibious invasion in history, forever known as D-Day. Across the beaches of Normandy, thousands of brave men faced unimaginable odds to secure a foothold for freedom in Europe.

The courage, sacrifice, and determination displayed that day changed the course of history. Many gave everything they had, not for recognition, but for the hope of a better world.

Today, the Commemorative Air Force Great Plains Wing pauses to remember those who served and those who never came home. Their legacy lives on not only in history books, but in the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As stewards of aviation history, we are proud to help preserve the stories and aircraft that connect us to that pivotal moment in time. May we always honor their sacrifice by remembering their mission, and by striving to live lives worthy of it.

Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and turning point in history marked by the Battle of Midway.

Just six months after Pearl Harbor, the United States Navy faced off against the Imperial Japanese Navy near a small atoll in the Pacific. What followed was one of the most decisive air and naval battles ever fought. In just a few days, American forces sank four Japanese aircraft carriers, shifting the balance of power in the Pacific and changing the course of World War II.

Victory at Midway was made possible by the skill and determination of the pilots, aircrew, and sailors who answered the call, many of whom never returned home. Flying aircraft like the SBD Dauntless and TBD Devastator, they pressed attacks against overwhelming odds, demonstrating extraordinary bravery in the face of danger.

At the CAF Great Plains Wing, we remember these aviators not just for their victory, but for their sacrifice. Their legacy lives on in the aircraft we preserve, the stories we share, and the mission we carry forward, to Educate, Inspire, and Honor.

As we reflect on Midway, we invite you to join us in remembering the Greatest Generation and the heroes who helped secure freedom in one of history’s most pivotal moments.

Never forget. Always honor.

On this day in 1940, the prototype XF4U Corsair took to the skies for the very first time. With its unmistakable inverted gull wings and massive Pratt & Whitney engine, the Corsair would go on to become one of the most iconic fighters of World War II.

Originally designed for the U.S. Navy, the Corsair quickly earned a reputation for speed, toughness, and combat effectiveness in both WWII and Korea. From carrier decks in the Pacific to close air support missions over rugged terrain, the “Bent Wing Bird” became a legend in aviation history.

Eighty-six years later, the roar of a Corsair still turns heads and reminds us of the pilots, crews, and engineers who helped shape history through aviation.

This Memorial Day, the Great Plains Wing of the Commemorative Air Force pauses to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

The aircraft we fly and preserve are more than pieces of history. They are flying tributes to the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of those who never came home. Every takeoff, every flyover, and every story we share is done in their honor.

As you spend time with family and friends today, we encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

We remember. 🇺🇸
