It's hard to believe but the clock is ticking on 2026 tax planning. Is your business ready?

We're officially in the final quarter of the year, but there's still time to make smart financial decisions that could help reduce your business's tax liability.

Here are five things every business owner should be thinking about before December 31:

✅ Review your financials. Know where your business stands and what your year-end income might look like.

✅ Check your estimated tax payments. Make sure you're on track and avoid unnecessary surprises.

✅ Think strategically about major purchases. Timing equipment purchases and other investments could make a difference in your tax situation.

✅ Evaluate retirement contributions. Explore opportunities to save for the future while potentially reducing your taxable income.

✅ Plan for what's next. Hiring, expanding or making a major business change? Understand the tax implications before making your move.

💡 Remember, effective tax planning happens BEFORE the year ends, not when it's time to file your return.

At Summersgill CPA, we help business owners look beyond tax preparation to make informed financial decisions, identify tax-saving opportunities and plan confidently for what's ahead.

✈️ Traveling for business? The IRS has updated its per diem rates for 2026–2027.

Beginning October 1, 2026, new rates take effect for certain business travel expenses, including lodging, meals and incidental expenses.

Under the IRS high-low method, the new per diem rates are:

📍 $329 per day for high-cost locations
📍 $230 per day for other locations within the continental U.S.

For business owners and employees who travel for work, per diem rates can help simplify recordkeeping and reimbursement for qualifying travel expenses.

🏖️ The answer: Sometimes—but packing your laptop doesn’t automatically make it a business trip. 😉

If you’re traveling primarily for a legitimate business purpose, certain expenses may qualify for a tax deduction. But squeezing in a client call between the beach and dinner doesn’t necessarily mean you can put the whole trip on the company books.

The key is understanding why you’re traveling, how you spend your time and which expenses are actually business-related.

So before you book that getaway and call it a “business retreat,” check with your tax advisor. 😎🌴

Our team can help you understand what may qualify and make sure your business travel deductions stay on the right side of the tax rules. https://bit.ly/3tvqlIw

🐶 True or False: Can you write off your dog on your taxes?

The answer: Sometimes!

Your family pet generally isn't tax-deductible, no matter how convinced they are that they're a full-time member of the team. 😉

But there are certain situations where dog-related expenses may qualify for a tax deduction, depending on the dog's role and your circumstances. For example, certain expenses associated with a legitimate business use or a qualifying service animal may be deductible.

The key? Your dog needs more than an adorable face and an impressive résumé. 🐾

Tax deductions can get complicated, so before you put Fido on your tax return, contact our team. We can help you understand what qualifies and make sure you’re not overlooking valuable deductions. 🐾

Charitable giving can be about more than supporting the causes you care about. It can also be an important part of your tax and financial planning. ❤️

If you’re considering a charitable gift in 2026, keep in mind that contribution deductions may be limited based on your adjusted gross income (AGI), the type of gift and the organization receiving it.

A few things to know:
✔️ Cash contributions to many qualified public charities may generally be deductible up to 60% of AGI.
✔️New for 2026, taxpayers who don’t itemize may be eligible for a deduction of up to $1,000 in qualifying cash contributions, or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly.
✔️For larger gifts, timing and what you choose to donate can make a difference in the potential tax impact.

If charitable giving is part of your year-end plan, now is a good time to start the conversation. Our team can help you evaluate your options and coordinate your giving strategy with your broader financial goals. https://bit.ly/3tvqlIw
