The Eastern box turtle is the only box turtle you’ll find in New York, and they’re pretty uncommon. They’ve got that classic high, rounded shell and can actually close themselves up tight like a little box when they feel threatened. You’ll usually find them in forests or overgrown fields, slowly moving around looking for bugs, berries, and mushrooms. If you come across one, it’s best to just leave it where it is—moving them can actually do more harm than good, unless of course they are on the road.
NOTE: Even if you find an empty shell like this one in the woods, technically you’re not supposed to collect or keep it without a permit.
