•Jotul F3 Wood Stove in Ocean Green Enamel•

It has been quite the April here at the shop, with more snow and then spring finally starting to arrive here in the North. The wood stove is down to mostly night duty. Which means the fire I lit back last year and burned 24/7 to keep the family warm all winter finally went out for the first time this season.

And with the seasons changing, the activity level always rises around the shop! Between the birds and the rustling of nature, we also have lots of old and new clients stopping by. Winter projects are getting picked up, and a steady stream of spring and next year projects is coming in.

This Jotul F3 Woodstove I'm sharing today is one you've already seen me post about way back in 2023!

The client I restored it for found out it just wasn't big enough to heat his yurt the way he wanted, so he instead found a Jotul F500 Oslo and asked me to restore it for him. So he gave me the F3 towards the cost of the Oslo restoration. And these F3s in the rare early enamel colors, in this immaculate shape, seldom show up. I had another client who was interested in it, so we worked out a deal, and I got to work!

Since I rebuilt this stove 3 years ago, there is much less that needs to be done now, but mainly pulling apart all the internals, cleaning the stove, inspecting, and replacing all the gaskets.

I decided it would be easiest to replace all the internals with new stock I had on hand, and I can sandblast the ones I took out later and reuse them.

Overall, I found that this stove was treated perfectly since I rebuilt it, and the stove and cement had cured perfectly! After I got the stove cleaned out, I started adjusting the new parts for fit as I put them back in, along with new insulation.

Finally, we cleaned and polished all the enamel on the stove to make it shine beautifully again, and fit the door with new glass and new gaskets all around.

After everything, we got the stove sorted and looking beautiful and perfect again! The client who decided to take the stove was amazed and overjoyed by the results, and I cannot wait to see the stove set up in its new space!

•Before and After Jotul F3 Wood Stove•

While we did get our tease of spring and 40-degree weather last week, which melted a good amount of the snow covering everything, then bam, another 20" of fresh snow this week since last Tuesday. And now sitting back around a 30" base of snow on the ground. That's why we never fall for fake spring this far north!

Today I'm sharing a F3 I finished up a little while back and forgot to post. This one showed up in the dead of winter, the internals were blown out completely, and the stove overall had seen much better days.

After the initial visual inspection of "yep, that's bad," we move on to full disassembly. When F3s are this burnt out, that process can be a nightmare as all those internals fit together with about 1/8" of extra space. Overheated and warped parts can cause the internals to be stuck in place, as if they were welded together.

And even though this one wanted to put up a fight, it was no match for the experience I have from tearing down more of these stoves than anyone else.

After carefully throwing all the burnt-out internal parts into the scrap pile and ordering new ones, we got all the body parts that were in great shape, ready to sandblast and paint.

After sandblasting and painting with Thurmalox High Temp Stove Paint in Satin Black, we got to assembling the stove right back to foundry condition, and fitting all the new internals.

In the end, we have another beautiful Jotul F3 ready to go again. The client was overjoyed with the results, and after a bit of explaining on how to run the stove properly, I'm confident it will last another 25-35 years without issue!

•Before and After 1986 Vermont Iron Elm Wood Stove•

Well, after a week of false spring and 4 beautiful days above 40 degrees, we are back into winter and more snow. We still have a few feet of snow in the yard, but we did get some mud on the roads, which is always fun in Vermont. But the house wood stove is still going strong and hasn't been out since being lit last October, which means it's still winter here!

Today I'm sharing a beautiful 1986 Vermont Iron Catalytic Elm Woodstove that a client dropped off. She had purchased this stove new in 1986, in the Metallic Charcoal color with nickel everything, including the rare original nickel shelves!

The stove arrived partially disassembled, so we finished that process while inspecting all the parts. Other than the baffle and combustor can, the stove was really in solid shape!

The first step after prepping for sandblasting is removing all the nickel parts and putting them through our proprietary process to repair and clean them while preserving as much of the original patina as possible. This is a long process when you have two huge 24" nickel shelves to do as well.

While we finished up that process, we went ahead and got everything sandblasted back down to bare metal and prepped for paint. The client requested we keep the same Metallic Charcoal color, which is not a problem, since I have all the paint codes that the original Elms were offered in. Thurmalox always made the paint for these stoves. The same professional-grade brand of high-temp stove paint we use in the shop daily.

After everything was painted and cured overnight, we got to drilling and fitting the replacement baffle, and assembling the stove exactly as it was when it was new. As always, double-checking fit and finish every step of the way.

And finally, after all is said and done, we have another stunning example of an original vintage Elm Wood Stove, and the client could not have been happier! And as always, I was thrilled to save another piece of Vermont history.

Thank you to everyone for reading and for the kind words and messages. And thank you to everyone who keeps bringing me stoves to bring back to life and help me continue living my dream!

•Before and After Cawley 500 Wood Stove•

Well, winter is easing up here on the mountain; we have had roughly 4 sunny days above freezing in the past week in the high 30s, with some more to come this week. And while southern New England is quickly melting its recent snow, we are still buried.

The snow on top of the wood stacks is still 4 feet high, and that is directly in the sun every day. Day-to-day life in the North is always a bit more intense, and we never fall for fake spring. We still have some winter left, and the wood stove at the house still has not gone out since being lit in October.

Today, we have a real special stove in the spotlight: the Cawley 500 woodstove. This stove was a build for a repeat client who found this stove hiding in my shop when he picked up his last restoration, and he just had to have it. I was hesitant to part with this one because they are one of my favorite models, but I knew it was going to a good home in a beautiful lakeside cabin with a client who would appreciate it as much as I do.

These were the last new stoves Bob Cawley designed and the smallest in the Cawley lineup, small enough to fit into almost any fireplace, with the air control lever hidden under the ash apron.

They were also heavily decorated on every side and the back with unique nature scenes sculpted and designed by Bob's wife, Martha Cawley. My absolute favorite part of this stove is the glass behind the trees and the bobcat. This creates a beautiful silhouette of the design when the fire is going.

Like every stove that comes through the shop, this one received the full breakdown and restoration, right back to foundry specifications. This includes full dismantling of the stove, sandblasting the parts back to bare iron, and painting with professional-grade Thurmalox High Temp Stove Paint in Satin Black before rebuilding it back to new condition.

After everything was done, we had another masterpiece on our hands. The client was blown away, and I was thrilled to save another piece of history to be appreciated for the next 50 years!

•Before and After Jotul F400 Castine Wood Stove•

As the rest of New England is still crippled by 3ft of fresh snow, the work never stops in the north! We have had 3 days above freezing for the first time in a couple of months, the past week. And the snow on the ground has settled down to about 4 feet deep. Snowbanks are still 15ft tall after having to move them back once this season.

This week, we are busy prepping the next 4 stoves for sandblasting. We have this beautiful Jotul F-400 Castine to share, which I finished up late last fall! Personally, these are some of my favorite stoves. I love the look and the small nautical details on the castings.

I used to do a lot more of these F400s years ago, but the popularity of pre-2020 Oslos and big F600s has exploded again. Which means more clients show up with bigger stoves these days. Which is awesome, I do love the challenge of the bigger stoves and the technical work required to get them back to perfect!

This stove arrived rusty and dusty, ready for a rebuild. But overall, it was in pretty good shape!

After we finished the full breakdown and inspection, we got right to sandblasting all the parts back to bare iron. This also gives us the chance to inspect everything again.

Next, we prepped and painted everything with industry-leading Thurmalox High Temp Stove Paint in the classic Satin Black. And then we let everything air-cure overnight.

The next day, we got right back into the shop and started assembly. We check and double-check every step as the stove is built back to foundry specifications. This stove we saved a few bucks on because the baffle was in great shape and could be rebuilt to brand-new condition.

All that was left was dropping the stove back off at the client's home, and they were amazed when they finally saw it in person!

Thank you for reading and following along! And thank you, everyone, who keeps bringing me stoves to save. It's turned into the busiest winter ever, and spring rebuilds are going to start coming in within the next month!

•Before and After 1988 Vermont Iron Elm Wood Stove•

Well, here we are, still deep in our Northern Vermont winter. Snow is slowing down a bit, with just over a foot in the past 5 days. Just in time to move snowbanks back for the next half of winter!

In the meantime, we are always finishing up and starting stoves! Here we had a client drop off an 18" Elm they had found online and wanted me to work my magic on it and bring it back to pristine shape.

During the full breakdown and inspection, we found that the stove was in great shape overall. It was just rusty, dusty, missing a few small bits, and had some beat-up nickel.

We start with our proprietary process of stripping any surface rust and paint from the nickel, restoring it to its beautiful state while preserving much of its original patina.

After we prepped and sandblasted all the other parts, we did our second inspection and prep for paint. If you have been hanging around, you already know what we use. It's only the finest Thurmalox High Temp Stove Paint in the classic satin black. Then we let everything hang out and air-cure overnight.

Last, we assembled the stove back to foundry specifications, and switched it back to the original shorter legs at the client's request for clearance purposes.

And just like that, we have another stunning woodstove to be proud of. And the client? They were simply in awe and in love with the results!

Thank you, everyone, for reading my posts, for continuing to follow me, and for all the kind comments. It means a ton to me! And thank you to all my clients who keep bringing me stoves so I can keep living my dream!

•Before and After Jotul F100 Wood Stove•

We are still pushing through another beautiful Northern Vermont winter. Temps are still well in the negatives, before wind chill, every night, and the snow keeps coming. Albeit at a bit slower rate this week.

But no winter weather stops the work around here; this is a typical January. And today we have my favorite little modern stove Jotul ever sold, the F100 Nordic. I love the original lattice tops on these. These stoves were made to slip right into almost any existing fireplace and add a chimney liner to connect it. And now you turned the fireplace into a space that produces usable heat.

During the complete breakdown and first inspection, we discovered that the internals had burnt out, which is why they were missing. The client broke the glass the season before. And essentially, after 25 years of outstanding service, it was due for a complete rebuild.

Next, we prepped all the parts and sandblasted every piece right back to bare iron. After another round of inspections, we got right to prepping the parts for paint. As always, we only paint with Thurmalox High Temp Stove Paint, this time in the classic Satin Black.

After everything was painted and air-cured overnight, we started final assembly. We prepped all the new Jotul parts, cleaning edges and ensuring the new pieces fit perfectly into the stove.

Lastly, the stove is rebuilt to foundry condition and a new piece of glass is installed, and it is once again a beautiful centerpiece for any room. I delivered this stove back to the client's home for them, and they were stunned by how great it turned out. And I am always happy to save another one of these little stoves!

Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to read my posts, sharing, and following. Thank you all for the kind comments and messages. And a huge thank you to everyone who keeps bringing me stoves to save!

•Before and After Jotul F3 Wood Stove•

Lots of talk about the weather, and a surprising amount of messages asking if we are prepared. Which is very much appreciated!

But we do stay prepared around here; these are normal winters for us. It's late January, a beautiful -20 degrees outside, already past 200" of snowfall this season, and snow banks taller than my truck. And since I only heat the shop and house with wood, no backup, I have a plentiful supply of firewood.

This is everyday life in the beautiful Northern Green Mountains of Vermont. You will find me enjoying this awesome dump of snow on Jay Peak tomorrow. If you're around, find me for free stickers!

Alright, back to stoves, here we have another of my favorite little guys, the classic Jotul F3 Wood Stove. In my opinion, one of the most versatile stoves Jotul ever made.

This one showed up in less than ideal shape. Internals warped and cracked. But the stove still looks great for being 25 years old with all the original internals.

You already know the process, but a quick snapshot, as always. We break the stove all the way down. Every nut and bolt. Two rounds of inspection while prepping for sandblasting.

After sandblasting, we do another part inspection while prepping for paint. The paint? Thurmalox High-Temp Stove Paint in a beautiful Satin Black. After we paint everything, we let it all air cure overnight.

Finally, we reassemble the stove to exact factory specifications. We replace all the worn-out internals. Then rebuild the door with a new piece of glass.

After everything, the stove is new again, the client is amazed, and I'm happy to save another stove for its next generation of heat!

As always, thank you all for reading my posts, the follows, and all the endless kind words. It means so much! And thank you everyone who keeps bringing me stoves to bring back to life! Every year, I don't think I could possibly get busier, and I always do. Thank you!

•Before and After Jotul Oslo F 500 Wood Stove•

Well, here we are in the Northern Vermont Mountains, with about 4 feet of snow outside, and pushing over 150-200 inches of total snowfall already this season! But the work never stops! (Thanks to you all!)

Today I am sharing a Jotul F500 Oslo Woodstove that arrived at the shop last fall. And you know it's always going to be a fun rebuild when it shows up missing pieces and already off its legs.

As always, we start with the complete breakdown and initial inspection. And this stove was hurting; the top and bottom were cracked from overfiring. The baffle? Non-existent. And the ash grate was entirely shot. But this stove, much like the rest, is a rebuild I can tackle with no issues.

Next, we prepped everything for sandblasting, then conducted a second round of inspections. This is important because you really do not want to waste time and money sandblasting bad or broken parts.

Once I sandblast all the parts back down to bare metal, it's time to get them back on the bench for paint prep and the third and final round of inspections. It's amazing what you can find hidden after sandblasting.

After finding everything left to be in perfect shape, we got right to painting. As always, we only paint with Thurmalox High Temp Stove Paint, this time in the classic Satin black.

After painting, we let everything cure overnight, get back at it bright and early the next day, and start assembly. We assemble the stove right back to exact foundry specifications, while fitting and checking the fit of all the new parts.

Then, after everything, we finally rebuild and fit the door. And finally, we have a beautiful Jotul Oslo, which looks better than when it was new! Needless to say, the client was overjoyed, and I was thrilled to save another Oslo!

Thank you all for following me into the new year. I'm excited to keep sharing restorations with you! And we have some shop surprises coming soon as well! As always, thank you for reading my post, following, and the floods of kind comments, messages, and phone calls. And thank you, everyone, who keeps bringing me their history to save!

As we close out 2025, I always like to highlight some of my favorite restorations from the past year and say a few words!

First, I always have to start by thanking every single person who brought me a stove in 2025 to restore and bring back to life! The fact that you all let me live my dream year after year is humbling, to say the least!

This year has brought so many amazing things to our doorstep. Once again, it was our busiest year ever! And on top of that, I put more miles on the road picking up client stoves, delivering them back, and buying parts stoves than I ever have! I put over 30,000 miles on my truck in 2025!

Not to mention the amount of freight shipping I did this year for clients from all over the country! We had stoves go back to Michigan, Montana, California, Georgia, West Virginia, and even Oklahoma this year!

As far as social media, you are all just incredible! I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for reading all my posts, following me, sharing my work, and, of course, the endless kind comments and messages! It gets my work in front of so many new people every year, and this year, between all of the socials, I am pushing 15,000 followers!

When you have a passion like mine and want to do what you love for a living, this level of support is invaluable. I have no words to describe the feeling other than fulfillment.

Now onto 2026, where we have even bigger things planned and more surprises to share with you all!

From ours to yours, we wish you all an incredible 2026!

•Before and After Cawley LeMay 400 Wood Stove•

Here we are mid-winter on the mountain. We have had over 100" of snowfall this season already, with no signs of letting up! But the work never stops! (Except for the occasional days spent on the snowboard, like today on my home mountain, Jay Peak!)

Today I'm sharing the stove that was hidden in the crate in the last post heading all the way to Tulsa, Oklahoma!

This beautiful Cawley LeMay 400 came to me in about as rough of shape as usual. Decades of sitting idle in barns always does a number on cast-iron stoves! So many critters love to make homes in stoves hidden away outside. But as always, this is my life, and I can make the magic happen.

You get the routine by now; we break it all down. And do the first round of inspections, we address any bolt holes and make sure the leveling feet work. Then we prep for sandblasting. And now we get it back for inspections round two, then onto the painting.

After the paint prep, we always paint with only the highest professional-grade Thurmalox High Temp Stove Paint, this time in traditional Satin Black.

Lastly, we assemble the stove right back to exact foundry specifications, and we are back to a stove that's even nicer than the day it left the foundry!

Both the client and I were overjoyed with the results! Now the stove is arriving in Oklahoma, to a large and beautiful hunting ranch, where it will be the centerpiece of one of the new cabins that are being built!

This is why I am obsessed with what I do: making people's dreams come true with the perfect stove, full of character, to tie together their cabins, homes, and camps!

Thank you, everyone. I say it every time, and I mean it. Your support, kind comments, and messages mean everything. And thank you to everyone who keeps bringing me stoves to save!

Until the next restoration!

-Nick

12/07/2025

No matter the time of year, we are always busy working and finishing stoves!

Today we got another beautiful stove crated and ready to head back home to Tulsa, Oklahoma!

Some of my favorite restorations are ones like this. This Cawley is heading to Oklahoma, but the cabin it's being put in has not even been built yet.

This is why I love what I do and the stoves I work on. I work on beautiful stoves with character because I understand that in the old days, and as it should be now, your wood stove is the heart of your home.

So when people request and commission me to do a restoration for them, for a camp or home that has not been built yet, it means the world. It means they understand as much as I do how important a stove with beauty and character is to them. They also understand it's the heart of the home or camp, and they want to build and design the structure around the stove.

This makes me feel amazing, and it's not a one-off. I'd say roughly 10-20 percent of my restorations go to places that don't even have a structure for them yet.

The amount of support, love, and trust you put into my work is the most humbling thing in my life. And I appreciate you all so much.

All I can say is Thank you! Thank you all for reading, for bringing me stoves, and for allowing me to live my dream!
