🔬 Advancing Alzheimer's Research with Vascularized Neuroimmune Organoids
Spoiler alert: the cytokines and growth factors are Gibco PeproTech
A new study in Molecular Psychiatry demonstrates how patient-derived brain extracts can induce multiple Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathologies in organoids. These models successfully recapitulate amyloid plaques, tau tangles, neuroinflammation, and synaptic loss, providing a powerful platform for translational AD research and therapeutic testing.
Key to this breakthrough were PeproTech growth factors and cytokines (including IL-3, M-CSF, FGF2, BDNF, GDNF, IL-34, and TGF-β1), which enabled the differentiation of cells into neural progenitor cells (NPCs), primitive macrophage progenitors (PMPs), and vascular progenitors (VPs). The PeproTech products were also key in assembling the cells into the final organoids and its maintenance of neural, vascular, and immune components within the organoids.
Also key was Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris 480 mass spectrometer, coupled with an Ultimate 3000 HPLC, for high-resolution data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics, so shout out to our colleagues at AIG.
💡 By combining advanced stem cell models with powerful analytical technologies this work opens new avenues for understanding Alzheimer's disease.
