Some flexibility with hours and occasional weekend shifts.

Happy 100th Birthday to our Dummy Light!

The oldest continuously operating traffic signals still directing active street traffic in the United States are the historic "Dummy Lights" installed in 1926, located in the Hudson Valley region of New York.

Three cities share this claim to fame:

• Croton-on-Hudson, New York: Located at the intersection of Grand Street and Old Post Road South (near the famous "Dummy Light" intersection), this signal sits on a brick base that originally housed a village cistern.

• Beacon, New York: Located at a busy five-way intersection where Main Street and East Main Street meet.

• There is actually a third surviving 1926 dummy light in New York located in the village of Canajoharie. It was taken down after a truck hit it a few years ago but was proudly reinstalled on an extra-high concrete base to keep the 1926 trio alive.

What is a "Dummy Light"?
In the early days of automotive travel, before overhead suspension cables or modern corner poles became standard, traffic signals were frequently mounted on heavy pedestals directly in the center of intersections—right where a traffic cop used to stand. They earned the nickname "dummy lights" because they worked automatically without human intervention.
