2024 LIGHT UP NAVAJO V SUMMARY AS OF APRIL 19TH
25 families connected – over 100 powerline poles set in place; approximately 9 miles of new powerline built
The 3rd week of the Light Up Navajo V mutual aid initiative is underway. For the past two weeks, NTUA has welcomed and hosted electric line workers from Salt River Project (SRP) Phoenix, Grand River Dam Authority from Oklahoma, Edmond Electric from Oklahoma, Roseville Electric Utility from California, and Sacramento Municipal Utilities District from California.
To date, the teams that were dispatched to Cornfields, Naschitti, Birdsprings, Leupp, Dilkon, Kaibeto, Tohatchi, and Tonalea have helped to connect 25 homes to the electric grid. The projects the teams will be working on are shovel ready – meeting all the requirements, including rights of way approval from the Navajo Nation.
During the Appreciation Dinner, families shared their heartfelt gratitude to the visiting line workers.
Light Up Navajo is a mutual-aid initiative to connect Navajo homes to the electric grid. This year there will be 41 outside electric utility companies that have signed up to send their line workers for a concentrated expedited effort to connect as many homes as possible, working alongside NTUA electric construction crews.
This year we will be welcoming an estimated 250 electric line workers from throughout the United States. The individual line workers volunteered and signed up to travel to the Navajo Nation to bring electricity to homes for the very first time. The last day of will be July 20th.
This week, line worker volunteers from Austin, Texas, Sacramento and Roseville, California, and the Town of Middleton, Delaware will be working in the Naschitti, Kaibeto, Crystal, and Jeddito communities.
